also, now that i am here, i might as well: ( the ibuprofen kicked in ) i know cailan is portrayed as somewhat naïve in his quest for glory but i think sometimes the fandom takes it too far and paints him as some kind of clueless buffoon. and he is not. like sure he's not as politically inclined as anora or loghain but he is not stupid. cailan tells anora about alistair. cailan made the effort to get to know alistair from a safe distance. cailan gave the order to keep alistair far from the horde in ostagar, so that in case he dies, there is still a theirin who can take the fereldan throne. like, yes, sure, he is eager for battle and perhaps he should have been more cautious. but in a way, wynne is right: cailan was responsible for keeping up the morale of his men, so he had to give them something to root for. but obviously, the king also considered the very real possibility that he might die at the hands of the darkspawn. and alistair was his contingency.
