The thing is, like, if you want to write a really good sportsball moment, you have to find those knife's-edge moments where one little technical advantage flips the switch. Writing a 1-1 game between two equally-skilled opponents and figuring out the thing that'll change it to someone's favor is surprisingly challenging to write well but it's so satisfying when done right. And very few people know how to do it right
#this is what makes that one terror football au fic so so good. it knows how to work within the bounds of the game#it gives you the perfect sensation of a middling championship side and it manages to convince you that maybe they could make it#to the fa cup final AND beat out thierry henry's arsenal. and that is something which is so so so hard to do effectively#you've really got to know the ins and outs of the game and know how to play them for pacing#thinking also about how much of a read you must be able to have on a game to write good sports pieces on a journalistic level#idk. i mean i don't want to be overintellectualizing sports but there is something about being able to write them which is really interesti#*interesting. i think it's also maybe why cricket and baseball produce the best writers because it's much easier to pull out what's happeni#*happening#perce rambles#the data breach hockeyshow fic also understands this. which i really appreciate because hockeyshow itself does NOT give a fuck
