Leslie Jones is an American actor, writer, and comedian. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and moved frequently as a child before attending college at Chapman University and Colorado State University. It was at Colorado State that Leslie discovered her talent for, and love of, comedy: one of her friends signed her up for a “Funniest Person on Campus 1987” contest, and despite her initial misgivings, Leslie wrote a stand-up act and won. She chose at that point to leave college and move to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a comedian and writer; however, she credits a move to New York City with teaching her the craft of comedy. Her first major successes came in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but she became a household name with her work since 2014, when she was cast as a regular on Saturday Night Live. She also serves as an SNL staff writer. She starred in the fabulous 2016 all-female reboot of Ghostbusters, which propelled her into political (and later, sports) commentary due to her being victimized by the neo-Nazi alt-right misogynist faction of social media agitators. She has since become a touchstone in the fight for better recognition in America that hate speech and protected speech are different things, and for better and more inclusive forms of identity protection for social media users.
