I just saw a post that was praising the show for taking "minor" characters like Varys and Littlefinger and giving them "more purpose". If anything they're overexposed on the show, you aren't supposed to know jack about them until the later books. But even then they were never minor, a minor character to me would be Orell (who they should have cut anyway). I don't get it. But I really hope we don't get another Littlefinger monologue about ladders.

I agree with you, they are not minor characters. If they are saying that they probably haven’t read the books. And giving them “more purpose”? If anything LF and Varys have “more purpose” in this story than many of the “main characters”. The key thing here is that we are not supposed to know about their actual purpose in the story till it’s completely necessary.

I agree they are giving away too much when it comes to LF. I think the writing fails to make him subtle enough to be a random helper of the crown, without losing that understated importance he’s supposed to have. Show!LF is a ruined character for me. In Varys’ case I think the writing has been a little better. They haven’t overdone it. But the scene with the box last season almost pushed the limits. For me Show!Varys leaves me wanting more (whether it’s for the acting or for the lines and scenes they include the character in), which is ultimately the feeling I get from reading about Varys. I guess I’m not so worried about Show!Varys yet. yet. yet. yet.

And you know we are going to get another LF monologue! I think there’s already something like that in the trailer.

I am disappointed that they deleted that scene. And I am sure there are more good deleted scenes, with Lysa Arryn, that was set to appear this season, and others. It's just sad that they had to delete good scenes to give more space to the worst scene in all of GOT's history, the whores and Podrick scene. And to think they even cut those Mad King scenes, that's just shit. I'd kill to see who they would cast as the Queen of Love and Beauty and her Dragon Prince.

I didn’t know Lysa was supposed to be in this season? That would have been great, since it actually shows some of LF’s storyline.

And I think the Mad King’s scenes were deleted because they are not going to show any flashbacks, as the producers have said. Therefore we won’t see much of Lyanna and Rhaegar. But that raises the question of how they’re going to make it work.

The original poster simply meant to do so some kind of joke comparing show!Littlefinger to book!Littlefinger. The show has depicted Littlefinger as a simple mustache-twirling villain. All of his cards are out in the open, and there’s no mystery to his actions. He spills the beans everytime he’s in the scene, and shows his leverage to the other players. Book!Littlefinger is sneaky, smart, witty, he plots, he hides his moves, he has paid spies all over the city, he’s majorly responsible for many things, he plotted and made happen, yet he hardly ever gets to carry the blame for them. The trail goes cold, whenever someone tries to find out something, and more often than not, the end of it it’s Littlefinger’s actions. The show portrays him as a cliche, in the books he’s far from it.

Ros' death may be another example of the heavy-handed symbolism being used by production to make their point. At the start of the show, Arya purposely aims for the head, breast and genitals of her target, by the show's end, Joffrey does just that on an expendable character. By doing so, they draw obvious parallels between Joffrey and the path Arya is on, while making sure Joffrey isn't garnering too much likability from his recent scenes with Margaery. The show paints itself into corners.

I noticed that.

I have my reservations towards it, cause:

1- they don’t need to reinforce the idea Joffrey is awful for people to get it. And there are other ways to show that, and justify the PW.

2- Joffrey is not Ramsay. He’s willing to make others suffer, kill, and have fun with it, but he doesn’t do it himself. He always comes off as a spoiled brat with too much power. But he doesn’t strike me as a psychopath in Ramsay’s terms, which is the feeling i got from the scene. 

3- Arya and Joffrey’s parallels freak me out, and I can’t personally agree to them. Even if we might see them in some things. Idk, I think I might only give a biased opinion on this point.

4- Doesn't this say more about Littlefinger than Joffrey though? Or at least that's my take on it.

Now, don't you think tthey could have done a better job with the casting of Littlefinger? I'm sorry, but I cringe way more at his scenes than Dany's, and IMO he's way worse, comparing to his book counterpart. There's no depth, there's nothing, It's just *creepy eyes* all the time, and I find Turner's Sansa really good. Just hope he doesn't rub his bad acting on her.

I don’t mind the casting, Gillen has had good performances on other shows. But in this one, he’s just not bringing it. I personally think is a mix between bad writing and bad acting. The character has been flattened, and that’s not the actor’s fault. I don’t think there’s any depth for him to explore on, so he can hardly portray it that way, when there’s nothing to work with. I don’t excuse him, because his acting is part of the problem, but the writing has done a lot of damage to a good character. I don’t think he’s the worst actor, even worst than Clarke, since he has had a couple of good performances outside of the show. And just for the show, he was fine on season 1. Not great, but sufficiently enough. I think his chemistry with Conleth Hill is perfect, and to me, that was the most important relationship that needed to be well represented.

I really like the character on the books, and it’s a pity they have damaged it so much.

I think Aidan was awful in S3E1... That interaction with Sansa was his worst scene thoughout all the series.. I don't know if it is bad acting though, because he does play a bit of cunt quite well... It is just some of the deliverly of his lines sound so awkward and forced. I love Aidan, he is brilliant in Queer as Folk and Mayday, so I don't understand how he is so bad, it isn't even poor material because they all have poor material (apart from the Peter, any mistakes made is his fault)

Well I agree with most of what you’ve said. But I personally think is a mix between bad acting and poor material. The thing is that, I can see other actors who have poor material too, have been able to sail through it. So, I really can’t put my finger on what it’s the real problem. So, for me, it’s just a mix of the two. 

I think he has plenty to change about his performance. And I would like him to hurry up, since Littlefinger is one of my favourites to hate on the books, and I actually liked him on season 1.

What bothers you about Aidan Gillen's performance? Sure, he's no Meryl Streep but he plays Littlefinger as a sneaky little creep which is pretty accurate for the character. Love the tumblr btw!

My problem starts mostly with the changes done on the character. So, like I said before, is hard to separate them.

I think Gillen is a better actor than what we get to see on the show. There’s definitely issues with his accent. Is like he tries to cover up his own, and ends up really messy. Secondly, he’s too rehearsed. Is like he thinks ahead what he’s going to do, giving it away moments before the actual line or action. Also he’s very literal with his interpretation, to the point of wanting to portray Littlefinger’s sneaky and tactical personality, with a swag or mannerism that reduces the personification to a simple villain. I also think this is the result of the writing of course, but is like both things combined make it even worse.

To this point, I don’t know how I can separate his acting from the writing, so I try to stay away, and just judge the character’s changes. But I felt his acting was bad in the first episode of this season, so I said so.

Thanks to you I'm starting to get annoyed with Aiden Gillen and how he talks sometimes, like he is the Godfather or something, at least that's what I thought during his scene in the episode. Damn you for opening my eyes!!
