I just saw a post that was praising the show for taking "minor" characters like Varys and Littlefinger and giving them "more purpose". If anything they're overexposed on the show, you aren't supposed to know jack about them until the later books. But even then they were never minor, a minor character to me would be Orell (who they should have cut anyway). I don't get it. But I really hope we don't get another Littlefinger monologue about ladders.
I agree with you, they are not minor characters. If they are saying that they probably haven’t read the books. And giving them “more purpose”? If anything LF and Varys have “more purpose” in this story than many of the “main characters”. The key thing here is that we are not supposed to know about their actual purpose in the story till it’s completely necessary.
I agree they are giving away too much when it comes to LF. I think the writing fails to make him subtle enough to be a random helper of the crown, without losing that understated importance he’s supposed to have. Show!LF is a ruined character for me. In Varys’ case I think the writing has been a little better. They haven’t overdone it. But the scene with the box last season almost pushed the limits. For me Show!Varys leaves me wanting more (whether it’s for the acting or for the lines and scenes they include the character in), which is ultimately the feeling I get from reading about Varys. I guess I’m not so worried about Show!Varys yet. yet. yet. yet.
And you know we are going to get another LF monologue! I think there’s already something like that in the trailer.
Thanks!

I would not oppose to a Tyrell POV, but Margaery would not be my first choice.

Sounds about right. I would love a Varys one, but I quite understand why there's isn't and there shouldn't be one.
Oh! I forgot! Conleth was great as always this season, his facial expressions are amazing. I thought his monologue about becoming a eunuch was definitely impressive. And no emmy submission for him? Perhaps one of these days we'll find D&D in a wooden crate.
We’d say they had it coming.
There were two major "oh shit!" moments for me - Theon and his revelation about fatherhood and the whole Varys arc. Yes, he did tell Tyrion his story, but the man in the box was just... too much. I really love Conleth Hill and he's doing amazing job, but I think they're trying to do the same thing they did with Littlefinger - taking all the mystery away. Oh, there's a 3rd "oh shit", how I could forget Podrick and his skills so great that even Varys is surprised! It was good episode, though.
Hey anon.
1- Theon saying Ned was a father for him was out of character, imo.
2- I don’t personally think they are giving away too much with the characterization of Varys. I think they gave just enough, and the sorcerer was a surprise, of course, but they didn’t kill his arc with that. He said something like doing awful things to get where he is now, but he never said what, and never explained more than he needed to. And I’d like to believe for every detail Varys reveals, he has a 100 more he hides. Also, he has a reason to disclose certain stories, so there’s always a leverage in everything he does. So, even if the show is not so great in following those little things, I still have hope for Varys.
3- And I’m starting to think the Pod situation was planned out by Tyrion and Littlefinger. Cause before Tyrion takes Pod to the girls, he’s talking to LF about granting the boy with some reward for what he did for Tyrion. So, maybe it’s all planned out, and the girls were paid to say he was awesome.
Thanks!
Did you love the fact that there was a lot of Varys in the latest episode (Conleth Hill being one of your favourite performers on the show??
Hi anon.
I loved it.
Both the writing and the acting worked perfectly, and I was really surprised with the sorcerer’s scene!
More coming up in the review.
thank you!
First: I love your blog, thank you so much =) So here is a random question for you that just crossed my mind: Are there any minor characters in ASOIAF you´d like to read more about? (For example because you like his/her hinted background story, phrases, function or for no particular reason at all)
Hi! Thank you!
Love your question btw!
Yes, I think I’d love to know more about Varys, but that probably would ruin the point of the character and his motivations. The great thing about Varys is the mystery he is, so I get why we don’t get more.
The Black fish is another character who I’d love to know more, simply because he’s like a 100% Tully, and he represents the family motto to perfection, and I always thought there wasn’t enough of the Tullys in general.
I think I'd have also liked to know more about the commoners. Maybe a POV of a smaller character, that doesn't have much importance on the story, but maybe can see things differently and judge from his/her point of view, the life of the high lords, and their friends, and add the story of their own struggles. I know Davos or Areo are examples let's say, but I think I'm aiming more to a character like Shae for example, or maybe one of Dany's handmaidens. That's why I liked the books' prologues.
That's all I can think for now.
Thanks!
