When Jean opened his eyes, the darkness was overwhelming. He felt a weight sitting on his chest – no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get enough air to fill his lungs – and in that moment, he thought he heard Riko’s voice in his ear. ‘No,’ he thought, ‘Riko’s dead. Riko’s dead.’ He repeated it over and over in his head, but he felt phantom restraints on his wrists and ankles, like the ones Riko would use to tie him down. He couldn’t make himself move – it was as though his was paralyzed. ‘This isn’t real,’ he tried to convince himself, but there was a part of him that wasn’t entirely sure – in the complete darkness, it was like he was back at The Nest.
Pain burst through his body when he felt the ghost of Riko’s knife across his chest – he tried to stay silent, he knew that screaming would only make Riko hurt him more – but he couldn’t stop the scream that was torn from his throat. He would be punished for that, Riko would make sure of it. Jean could hear Riko’s bitter laughter in his ear, but it disappeared when the room was filled with bright white light.
“Jean?” the voice sounded worried and, for a moment, Jean thought he’d died. “Jean, are you alright?”
It took a moment for Jean to calm down and remember where he was. USC, not Edgar Allan. “Yes,” he finally replied, his voice hoarse. He took in his surroundings – the Trojans jersey hanging over the chair by his desk, the light blue curtains, and Jeremy, looking frightened and clutching a flashlight. “It was just a nightmare,” he said, more for himself than for Jeremy. He had to be sure, though, so he pressed his hand against his chest, surprised at the lack of blood.
“Are you sure?” Jeremy asked. Jean couldn’t help but see the concern in his dark eyes, the way his body seemed to be on high alert, and he found it endearing. Jean couldn’t remember the last person who had actually cared about him that much.
“Yes,” Jean nodded, but he knew that Jeremy didn’t believe him.
“The power went out,” Jeremy explained, followed by a brief pause. “I can leave the flashlight here if you need,” he offered, placing it onto Jean’s desk.
Jean felt his heart skip a beat – he didn’t want to be alone, even if he had a flashlight. “No,” he whispered, desperately trying to find the words. He didn’t like asking for help, it was something completely foreign to him. “Please, can you…” he trailed off, embarrassed about asking Jeremy to stay.
“Yeah,” Jeremy answered, “I’m right here.” He sat down on the office chair by Jean’s desk, rolling it closer to the bed.
An easy silence fell between the two of them – it was one of the reasons Jean felt most comfortable around Jeremy. He was one of the only people who didn’t push for information, who never asked Jean about his life in The Nest, who didn’t want to know the horror stories that lived in Jean’s past.
Lightning flashed outside the bedroom window and Jean jumped, his body still on edge.
“It’s okay, Jean,” Jeremy reassured him, his voice so soft that Jean could barely hear it over the crack of thunder outside. “You’re safe here, I promise.”
And for the first time in his life, Jean truly believed it.
for the touch prompts, maybe renison + holding hands? if u want !!
a/n: so i wrote one draft of this and then, like an idiot, i pressed back and lost it. this is the rewrite and it isn’t as good, sorry. it’s also my first time writing renison, so I hope it’s okay! This is also set at Eden’s Twilight when the upperclassmen and the monsters went together for Halloween.
send me a prompt for a 15 minute drabble!!
Renee could barely hear herself think over the blaring music - she could feel her heart pounding along with the heavy base line. She wove her way through the crowd, searching for the Foxes as she went. Between the flashing lights and the myriad of brightly-coloured costumes, it was hard for her to find anyone. She tensed up when she felt a hand clasping her own - not sure who to expect when she turned.
She was met by Allison’s smiling face and felt her shoulders sag with relief. Allison pulled her closer before leading Renee through a maze of people to where Dan, Matt, Nicky, and Aaron were dancing. She leaned in, her lips brushing against Renee’s ear when she spoke, still needing to raise her voice considerably to be heard over the music. “Good thing you’re easy to find!” Her breath was warm against Renee’s skin and Renee felt her cheeks flush - although she doubted it was obvious as everyone’s cheeks were beginning to look rosy.
Renee expected Allison to let go of her hand when they reached the group but she didn’t - they danced with their hands clasped and Renee purposely avoided the pointed look Dan was sending their way.
Dan was one of the few people that knew about her crush on Allison - well, Andrew knew, too, but he didn’t care. Dan cared. She was deeply invested in Renee’s relationship with Allison and had promised that they would be together by the end of the year.
However, subtlety was not something Dan particularly excelled at.
Renee pushed the thoughts of Dan out of her head and focused on Allison, instead; the way she tossed her hair, her soft hands. She grinned when Allison spun her around - it felt strange and out of place as it didn’t suit the music at all. Renee wasn’t complaining, though, not when Allison was pulling her closer, their faces so close that it wouldn’t take much for their lips to meet.
Without overthinking it, and ignoring the fact that they were in public, Renee closed the gap between their lips, emboldened when Allison kissed her back. This was everything she’d wanted for a long time, and it was better than she could have imagined.
Even over the relentless pounding of the music and the sound of the crowd around them, neither Renee nor Allison missed Dan’s holler of excitement. They pulled away from each other, laughter on their lips.
piggy back rides with the ship i love more than anything in the world kevin and matt
a/n: this is written from Renee’s POV (which I have never written before, so I hope it’s okay) and has very little to do with piggy back rides, but does have to do with the development of Kevin and Matt’s relationship, and Kevin’s healing…
send me a prompt and I’ll write a 15 minute drabble!
There were times when Renee could not believe how much Kevin had changed in the past year. After Riko’s death he had hit a low that none of the foxes had seen from him, not even when there was a chance he may never play exy again. He had been harsher, ruthless, and had pushed everyone away more than he had before.
Until Matt.
Maybe that wasn’t fair, to give Matt all of the credit - it took a lot of courage for Kevin to pick himself up long enough to realize that he was free. But it was Matt’s persistence that had eventually broken through the armor that Kevin had wrapped himself in.
Renee never expected Kevin to get to the point of casual intimacy in such a short amount of time. It was something she’d been working on for several, and she still jumped when someone touched her shoulder when she wasn’t expecting it. Seeing Kevin’s genuine smile felt like a gift, one she was very grateful for.
It was wonderful - seeing Kevin trust someone other than Andrew or Wymack, seeing him start to trust all of the Foxes.
Of course, she had seen it before anyone else. There were too many lingering looks for her not to notice what was happening between Kevin and Matt. Their touches were softer than they should be, Matt’s fingers brushing Kevin’s skin like he never wanted to stop. But Renee was absolutely certain that something was happening when, after scoring the winning goal, Kevin had jumped onto Matt’s back and Matt had paraded him around the stadium, much to the enjoyment of the fans.
She knew that Andrew had noticed it then, too, but had yet to ask him what he thought. It was sure to cause some conflict, but Andrew had mellowed out some since he had gone off of his medication - a fact Renee contributed mostly to Neil’s presence.
Renee knew that, when Kevin and Matt finally came clean, she would win big.

Eden’s Twilight seemed busier than it typically did when they came for their nights out. Kevin could feel his heart pounding along with the bass line and the warmth of liquor spreading through his veins – it was the only way he could stand the music, honestly, and the best way to run from the problems he couldn’t work off on the court. He drank to forget his secrets, to forget all of the horrors that had been inflicted on him and that he’d inflicted on others at Riko’s command.
