I think the reason demon days is often a fan favorite is because the album works with or without the gorillaz lore; it fits the story of them coming back for a second album with noodle being the main writer for it after coming to terms with her dark past, and without knowing a thing about the characters it's a rich, cohesive concept album that's an allegory for the social and political turbulence of the early to mid 2000s
