[needle drop]
Rita’s visit had left Max numb. It was as if no matter what they did, they were destined to suffer under the hand of fate. So much of their life had been devoted to staying upright in the face of the unimaginable. It never mattered that they rarely understood why their world was so often knocked off its axis, as long as they played along, all would fall into place. Moving back to Simone’s full time was out of the question. Christine had been far less maternal, treating Max like a friend rather than her impressionable offspring, so in comparison Simone’s attempts to comfort and care for Max felt like slow suffocation.
Truthfully, if what Max believed had caused the fire, had actually caused it, then they needed to be as far away from family as possible. Things may have been strained right now but Max had lost so much of themself to grief already, God knows who they’d become if they had to endure anymore of it…
