didn't want to add it to @balrogballs' post because it's only partially related to only one of the issues brought up in the post, but while we're at it. I think replying to (not exactly the right term but bear with me) "watsonian" racism ("the shire is white") with "watsonian" arguments ("this is wrong because XYZ") is ultimately useless because that's not the point! we're talking about real people of color being gatekept from real roles and real money based on fictional rules of a fictional world, which is plain absurd. we cannot treat the "watsonian" explanations for why every actor in a production "should" be white as if they're equally as valid as arguments about REAL people's lives and careers. they're not equal!! one is literally made up!! come the fuck on

You know, the more I think about it, Mike being an asshole out of the blue can’t be bad writing. It’s not like Will and Mike are the only friends on the show so the writers just don’t know how to write friendships.

We have made Steve and Robin such a cute strong purely platonic friendship/relationship. Then we have the og party. Lucas wanting to focus on finding Will in s1, he apologised to Will about his behaviour when he only set him aside once (when Mike did it too). Then, Dustin never ditched them to talk to Susie. He took all of his friends up that hill to talk to her and he clearly wanted them to be there. Which makes sense, right? You want your friends to meet someone you really like. Even Jonathan & Nancy, have other interests and they’re in love, right? So romance isn’t just being together 100% of the time & only making out. But then we have Mike who all of the sudden wants to spend all of his time with El (let’s not talk about the quality of the relationship here).  So basically is the only one on the entire show that does that, when we have seen how much his friends mean to him in s2.

Tldr: Duffers know how to write purely platonic relationships, romances and show the importance of friendship. If Mike is 100% straight, it would make no sense for him to keep ditching Will when he knows how much that hurt him and when even Mike himself was upset about hurting him.
