— ALICE WAS WORRIED, well she was always worried but especially about finley. the redhead had arrived at his place almost an hour ago and he was nowhere to be found. luckily she knew where he kept a key and let herself in making her way to see his hamster move around in his cage letting herself get comfortable by removing her jacket, exposing her white dress covered in flowers. “ hey goldie ” the redhead giggled looking at the pet with a soft smile, bending slightly “ do you know where finny is ? ”

“Come with me!”

Tybalt jolted upright, hands already reaching for the knife on his bedside table before his brain registered the source of the voice.

“One of these days you are going to get yourself killed,” he whispered sharply, “And I won’t be surprised if it’s by my blade.”

Mercutio grinned, swinging down from the skylight and landing heavily on the floor.

“Would you try to be quiet? You’ll wake the whole household!”

“Apologies, my Prince of Cats, but some of us don’t always land on our feet.” He got to his feet and brushed himself off, almost touching the low ceiling as he straightened. “Are you ready to go?”

Tybalt frowned. “What outlandish scheme have you thought up this time?”

“It’s a surprise, of course! Just pack a spare change of clothes and grab your keys, we’re taking your car. ”

Mercutio flashed another smile over his shoulder as he disappeared out the window. After throwing together a change of clothes, a knife, and his cell phone, Tybalt crept through the Capulet house and out the back door without a sound.

As soon as they pulled out of the Tim Horton’s drive-thru where a baggy-eyed teenager had supplied them with coffee, Mercutio started talking.

“So Uncle is away on that trip to Mantua for a few days, you know, and so of course he wanted me to babysit Val like usual which is fine and all-- turn right up here-- because I love the kid and he’s pretty chill, mostly. But, I don’t know, we just did that whole vacation where I was stuck in a car with him and Paris for like, two weeks, you know how you’d get sick of even, like, your soulmate if there was basically -- left!-- like, at max three inches between the two of you for day after day after day after day after day…”

Mercutio continued on as such; complaints about his relatives and musings on the effectiveness of “family-bonding” vacations peppered with directions. Tybalt let him ramble on, keeping his eyes on the road. This was their usual road trip routine; Tybalt would pretend he was focused on driving and wasn’t listening, Mercutio would pretend he didn’t notice, both would enjoy the easy company of the other. Neither ever made any effort to change. Besides, Tybalt thought, he rather liked listening to Mercutio’s voice when it wasn’t throwing taunts and insults.

If he wasn’t driving he would have liked to watch Mercutio talk too, but the steering wheel and the still darkened road required almost all his attention. Instead he let his mind wander, one part still tuned in to Mercutio and the drive, the other fondly picturing in his mind’s eye how Mercutio’s eyes crinkled when he made one of his terrible jokes, despite his expressionless face and deadpan voice.

After an hour the names on the signs stopped looking familiar, and Tybalt turned the radio down to concentrate on the increasingly bumpy road. Unfortunately it was not as simple to quiet Mercutio, who continued to sporadically relay directions.

“Straight ahead here, now left.“

“Alright, two rights right here”

“Keep going as straight as I am”

Tybalt groaned audibly as they sped past a dirt path, “That was the turn, wasn’t it?”

“Yep,” Mercutio winked, not at all sorry, “It’s fine, you can turn up here too.”

Then Bertholdt calling out for her as he gets eaten. Think about it! Ugh! All the secret possibilities! I think it's safe to say "Calling out your name" is a Beruani song. Listen to it.
