robin, emily dickinson & the masculine persona; a few quick notes

(there's a lot I could say on Robin's relationship with femininity, but for now here are just some quick notes about Robin and gender non-conformity)

a/n: while I personally view Robin as a transmasc lesbian who is genderfluid and/or multigender (+ also still identifies with femininity in some way), I do think it also makes perfect sense within my understanding of Robin to see her as a woman (whether trans or cis) and/or another gender(s).

in the case where Robin is strictly a woman (or otherwise not transmasc and such), I do strongly believe that she is still much more gnc than society allows her to be.

this post uses Robin's canonical pronouns and mainly argues in favor of Robin being at least somewhat gender non-conforming and/or androgynous. what specific gender you believe Robin has is up to you.

^ here is the part in Robin's Myriad Celestia trailer where she goes out dressed in disguise of androgynous/masc-ish clothing, only for the paparazzi to get a photo of her in that disguise.

this is then interpreted by everyone seeing the photo as there being a man close to her, who is immediately assumed to be involved with her sexually, which turns into an awful scandal for her, because the idea that Robin might not be single [/has a partner/is "tainted" by having been with a man/is "impure"/is not loyal to only them] causes outrage among her parasocial fans.

this shows us two things (well, it has many implications, but here are two of the many things that this directly says about Robin):

people want and demand Robin to be a pure clean innocent virginal Madonna girl and hold her to intense scrutiny on that [<- this is very important as far as the robin & gender analysis goes; I would probably elaborate on this in the future]. and the moment they think she's possibly deviated from that ideal (and they are very quick to make such assumptions indeed), they punish her for it.

people assume it to be entirely impossible and completely out of question for Robin to ever deviate from femininity. and the moment she gets seen by them while she is doing such a thing (they do not see it, though, because they don't even consider it possible for Robin to be more masculine or androgynous), the world punishes her for it.

however, it's worth noting that Robin later, in the same trailer, also puts on this disguise again as it helps her disguise & protect herself from the paparazzi and/or stalkers chasing her and helps her escape from them.

furthermore:

[Hobbies] Sometimes I just put on a wig, change my makeup, and slip on a pair of glasses – just like that, I can go anywhere without a worry~

like, if it's only the Myriad Celestia trailer alone, I'd say it's unclear if Robin really likes doing this or if she just has to do it, but if you look at the voice quote above, it's interesting that her "Hobbies" voiceline of all things is about her liking to dress up in disguise.

now, of course, we know Robin certainly doesn't exclusively use androgynous/masc-leaning disguises (see: the player meets Robin hiding in the form of a female Intellitron NPC when doing the hidden sub-mission in the Penacony Grand Theatre), but I do wonder if it's possible that she does use those ones a lot outside of Penacony (inside the dreamscape you can disguise yourself as another species with the power of the Harmony, if you have it)? so it says something that Robin considers this a "hobby" of all things.

on a related note:

most of us probably are familiar with the fact that Robin's song titles directly reference Emily Dickinson's poetry, but did you know about Dickinson's use of the masculine disguise/persona?

there's still more I could say on this (this post basically doesn't talk about robin and femininity, a topic that I'll probably need several posts to talk about + also, notably, "using a different gender presentation than what one is normally tightly restricted to in their usual life - as a temporary escape and refuge - in a way that also 'disguises' this person from being identified by the entity chasing them [be it paparazzi and stalkers, or the Bloodhounds]" is, interestingly, something we've seen three different times in relation to this planet; it's done by not only Robin, but also two certain other Penacony major players... namely, Firefly and Sunday. I do think this has implications, yes.) but I'll leave that for later. this is it for now I think
