Fahnstock: Accommodating Science Article

3. I agree with Fahnestock in that some scientific fields are difficult to accommodate for the public. On page 5, she discusses a piece from a science writer from a Dental Research Institute. She quotes him saying that the public doesn’t care much for information in journals unless it affects their pocket book or pain threshold. I am going into the dental field so I was rather surprised to see a reference to the dental community. It struck me that the public usually doesn’t seek out specific articles or pieces of writing that include mathematics or physics as she used as an example. If you peruse through your Facebook or a friends’, usually you will see articles of how a certain medication has side effects. Or how there is a new weight loss diet that takes less time and requires less work.

Scientists who work with directly human related scientists are usually found to have sought after journals in the next way to make our lives easier. Even as such, chemistry has a large impact on human related science as well, but most of the public doesn’t look for the next compound to be super cooled. Rather, they want to see how that chemistry has been applied to the medical portion of it all and how it helps them out. My field in dentistry relates to people directly and so it is easy to sit down and look up research that has been accommodated for the public that isn’t so dry. Chemists and otherwise must prove themselves to their peers most importantly and from there, they can attempt to bring down their writings. Yet there is only so much one can do to take a piece of information before it doesn’t mean what it usually does.

What struck me is the piece where she described on page 6, how a bee with teeth writing was accommodated. They changed the writing in a certain way that drastically altered the interpretation. Rather than saying the bee eats only certain things in its diet, the accommodated piece said that the bees could eat any animal. She went on to describe that this could mean bees can eat humans by that definition and it really changed my perspective on how drastically phrasing can change the intent of a piece of writing.
