The Spanish government has recognised they spent 87 million euros (106.4 million dollars) to stop the referendum on Catalan independence.

The Spanish government sent thousands of Spanish military policemen to Catalonia to stop the Catalan citizens from voting to decide the future of our country, because the Spanish government knew that yes to independence was going to win. The military police violently attacked the voters in numerous schools (where we vote). They wounded 1.066 people, including elders, people trying to get to an ambulance, and nurses attending the wounded. By the way, Spain gave an award to those policemen, saying they behave exemplarily, and are giving them a pay rise.

If you look on YouTube, you can find many videos where you can see some of the attacks. You can see how all the people who gathered in front of voting centers to defend them from the police are raising their hands as a sign of non-violence, and chanting “we want to vote” and “we are peaceful people”.

87 MILLION EUROS to stop people from voting peacefully? Yes, and they didn’t even achieve that. We voted. And 90% voted yes to independence.

The Spanish government spent 63 million euros (77 million dollars) in buying Latvia’s silence on Catalonia through army resources.

And not to begin to talk about the endless extreme corruption cases of the Spanish government…

And, surprisingly (lol nope), Spain can’t even pay the retirement to its citizens who have been paying taxes all their lives in order to get this payment.

This is happening today in Catalonia. We only want to vote, to be free to express our thoughts in this country, and they treat us like this. Shame.

About politics and what's happening in my country.

I live in Spain. To be exact, in Catalonia (a part of it, at least for now).

For a long, long time, Catalonia has been oppressed by the Spanish government; we pay them a lot of money which isn't given back to us, they want to make our language (catalan) disappear, etc. Many catalans want Catalonia to be an independent country. Even the government itself already makes a distinction when they speak: you're either Spanish or Catalan. But they don't want us to become independent. Because, actually, we'll all have trouble if we do.

But do you know what has been happening lately? Catalans want to vote to know if the majority of us want the independence. Spain (when I say Spain, I'm referring to the central government) doesn't want us to. They've been taking rights from us, they've been sending Spanish police officers (Catalonia has its own police), and they've spent MILLIONS of euros in doing so. It is true that the Catalan government hasn't exactly followed the law, and that the votes may not be valid. But the people just want to vote and be heard. There have been numerous manifestations and acts to suport the cause and people didn't even fit on the streets.

The day when we're supposed to vote is today. And I'm watching the news, and I'm seeing (Spanish) police officers armed with real weapons, pushing and hitting civilians armed with PAPERS. The papers they need to VOTE.

Now the person who is writing this (me, duh) thinks that there must be a way to stop oppressed but without the need of being independent, because that would be a lot of trouble for everyone. Spain may have to exit the EU, and of course Catalonia too. What the Spanish government has done is create tension that wasn't there, by doing the things they've done they have CREATED more people who want to be independent.

Me not being a native English speaker and thus not knowing vocabulary about the subject isn't letting me express everything I want to say so... Please do your research on the matter because after today Spain won't be the same and you may want to know why. (just search for the "Catalunya" tag here in tumblr, you'll see)
