Searching for inspiration on how to up the scale of my work, Tilleke Schwarz does some gorgeous embroidery collages, I can’t imagine how long these must take! Beautifully messy, yet totally intricate.

“All my work relates basically to one theme: the oddities of life. I include anything that moves, amazes or intrigues me. Daily life, mass media, traditional samplers and cats are major sources of inspiration. The result is a mixture of content, graphic quality and fooling around. Calling for failed drawings!

Hey friends! I'm on the hunt for failed drawings for assessment 3 to be reborn again in textile form! They can be old or recent, completed or half done, iPhone photos or scans or you could even bring them in during class! I'm interested in what people perceive as failure and would be really grateful to receive as many as possible! (You can email them to [email protected] all failures welcome) Please and thank you!

Working with textiles for the first time for assessment 3! They’re kind of a mismash of ways of seeing, failure states, documentation, editing etc. I’m excited to push these even further and to make a whole stack of them!

Editing - First collage getting ideas flowing. Like the idea of blurring as a symbol of the memory of creating the work. Second three piece was a work to simplify and accentuate the finer detail in the text.

Last one, I promise! 

This work consists of at least 4 thick layers of paint. It was crazy to watch things be added and others forgotten, as purple overtook green, green covered yellow. Things that I liked about it got lost as I added new layers and discovered new things that I liked. A very interesting process!

Late night work on the back of the head!

This shaky time lapse video documents the first stage of painting the head using an odd mixture of acrylic paint, white primer and a hair dryer (a technique I discovered in experiment 3). I created the bust out of a beer box which has a more slick outside than regular cardboard. I had hoped to make a cast of the bust which I could peel off and present as my assessment (hence the slicker surface) however, I was quickly steered in a new direction!

Inspired by one of my previous experiments and the ideas I had before starting my experimentation about exploring identity, I began to sculpt a head. I learned from my process that the cardboard became more malleable when scrunched and torn. The sculpture was made using  cardboard, hot glue and an old hat stand as the base. This is a time- lapse-esque video of making the head!
