Chalice of the Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis, 100BCE
This chalice, originally a fluted sardonyx cup carved in ancient Alexandria, Egypt, was transformed 1,200 years later by Abbot Suger into a jeweled vessel for sacramental wine at the abbey church of Saint-Denis, Paris.
Set in gilded silver and adorned with gems and pearls, it blends ancient craftsmanship with medieval devotion, featuring a solemn Christ medallion flanked by the Alpha and Omega.
