This was a super exciting day, I absolutely love clever 404 pages. Especially because they are so so important and can absolutely remedy a situation if there really was an error or a bad link on your site. I knew I wanted something that was a little whimsical and I REALLY wanted it to be a play on words. Thus this metaphorical floral design was born.
I had taken various watercolor floral elements and laid them onto the page, creating an organized mess of plants. I wanted the 404 to be “lost” in the flowers, like the user is “lost” in their search. This assignment definitely felt more designed and up my alley as I love working with type and images. I considered putting flowers in the various corners of the page, just to continue the motif. However, I decided that they distracted from the important elements on the page and simply wasn’t necessary.
The prompt stumped me at first, but then once I figured out what it meant, it was a piece of cake! The flash notifications I’ve designed is inspired by Animal Crossing. In the game, when you see an insect on a tree trunk, you can opt to catch it with your net. The identity of the bug isn’t revealed until you’ve successfully trapped it.
I wanted to combine the “good” catch and “bad” catch with a level of social interactivity, allowing the user to react and share their accomplishment. I also had these adorable animal illustrations, so it would have been a waste not to use them. I kept it minimalistic rather than Animal Crossing’s colorful speech bubbles because of the illustrations. I didn’t want the background to distract from the image I’ve included.
