Matured too soon
For all the adults who matured too soon as a child, I see you. Trauma, poverty, or simply neglectful parents took away your youth. A time in life that you never got to have or cherish. The ability to be oblivious to all things wrong in the world. Instead of being protected or saved, you were the one protecting and saving. My heart cries out for us. My spirit prays for us. As an adult, I realized that where I see myself slacking is due to the lack of care from those who were supposed to teach me. No matter how I got here, this new responsibility falls on me. Always. Even if there are no apologies or accountability from the ones who hurt me or you. And as an adult, it is our responsibility to teach ourselves and heal ourselves. It feels like trying to untangle balled-up barbwire. It's baby steps and things take time, yes, but the world feels like it's running out of time. Why is it that we can feel like we are so far behind in life? Healing is a journey that requires us to time travel. We must go back in time to confront, accept, and forgive what happened, no matter how wrong? What if even after we forgive, it still hurts? That is where I find conflict. We are 24 years old and have already faced so much. Is it going to take another 24 to combat it all? Maturing too soon is having the skills to survive but what about live life? Love? Care about ourselves in a way that helps us prosper and not just be. I could say more but the words have not found me yet. To be continued... J.D.H

“I tried to get information on a witch. I wanted to find out where she lived. I was posing as a man selling some kids - relax Dean, it was a cover - but she touched my arm and I think somehow picked up on you two. She laughed and dug her nails into me, breaking the skin -” John shows Dean the scabbed over crescent shaped mark on his arm. “The witch touched me and immediately took my form. She disappeared and left me there. I didn’t know what had happened, not right away, anyway. I must’ve gotten knocked out. Going in there, I had no idea she could read my mind, but I felt her pull a memory from me, or something. I saw her focus on Sam.” John paused, looking at Sam again. He shook his head and put his head in his hands. Dean instinctively put his hand on his father’s back.
Sam’s breath stayed shallow, eyes still closed, body unmoving.
Remembering Her
You know that feeling when you put in a coin at the arcade game- and those arcade coins are expensive as fuck. I think 25 coins costs like $15? At my local arcade- well it wasn’t really “local” it was like a 20 minute drive from my house. But the coins, they’re pretty big, at least half your palm- well they looked big in my small hands. My hands are pretty big now but when I was a kid they were small. Anyways you put in a coin at the game, some games actually need two coins to play but you know what I mean. You put in a coin, and the game is actually broken or something but it still lets you play, and you play the game but it’s your first time and you don’t really know what to do so you just smash buttons? And you end up getting like 100 tickets anyways? That feeling- oh God, you’re just staring in awe and the tickets keep coming and coming. And all the other kids are going WILD because you just hit the lottery and you can barely contain your joy. And you run to cash them in- and you get, what? Like a little plastic ring or something? It’s a rip off really it’s all just a scam the toys are worthless. But the FEELING when those tickets just keep coming. It doesn’t matter that 25 coins cost $15, it doesn’t matter that all you’re gonna get is a plastic ring. None of it fucking matters but the tickets. Only the tickets matter and you WON, you got those goddamn tickets. There’s nothing as purely wild and happy as that feeling. You know that feeling... that’s what it felt like to know Her. To love Her. God... I get goosebumps just thinking about Her. And now all I can do is remember Her.
