I feel my stomach lurch as I hold the weight of his sword in my hands. She has to be kidding, right? This is some kind of sick joke. God I really am gonna throw up. Several of the other recruits seem to be stifling laughter, like she didn’t just murder someone in front of us.

The General speaks again, “You’re still green so I bet they haven’t named you yet. I think I’ll call you Vert. Yeah, I think it-.” She stops mid-sentence, as if something has just struck her. Hesitantly, I ask if she's alright. Shaking her head, she mumbles something about “that word” being familiar.

“Nothin’ you need to worry about,” she grins, tossing her arm over my shoulders. “Now, Vert, come with me, we have much to discuss.”

I can almost feel my demise coming swiftly as we exit the room, leaving behind the other recruits.

…

I soon find myself sitting on the bed in her quarters, waiting for her to speak, or do anything at all. Looking around I see that her space is almost… cozy. The General didn’t strike me as the type to enjoy the finer things, but the floor is covered with rugs of various sizes and colors, and the bed is surprisingly soft compared to the person who owns it. There’s even a window, the light from which burns my eyes after being underground for so long. It reminds me of the cabin.

I blink and the General is kneeling in front of me. She speaks, shaking me from my thoughts:

“Do you remember?” It’s a simple question, but the tone of her voice and the look in her eyes gives it a weight that I’ve never felt before.

“Yes.”

There’s a tangible silence in the room as my answer hangs in the air. I start to wonder if that was the wrong answer when the General suddenly throws her arms around my midsection and shoves her face into my stomach. As she lets out a choked sob I open my mouth to ask her what the fuck is wrong with her but all that comes out is a squeaky “General?”

“Esmée. Call me Esmée. Please.” Her voice cracks on the last part.

“Right… Esmée.”

She sits back and shakes her head, chuckling. “I’m sorry, I just thought I was the only one,” still talking she stands up and extends her hand to me. “Come with me there's something I want to show you.”

We leave her quarters and walk silently down the seemingly endless hallway until we come to a single door with the words “morgue / infirmary” written on it in what looks like mud. As she opens the door there’s an intense smell that smacks me in the face.

Walking through the door, I immediately see what the smell is.

Death.

Shadows House episode 1 was interesting. I’m more fascinated than anything - there's certainly some clear mysteries at play already that I'd like to see get unravelled, mechanics of this world I really want explored, all that usual stuff. But also cute girls!!!!!!!!!!!
