Eva had a strained relationship with her parents for most of her life. They never really wanted to have a child and they were disappointed by her lack of interest in other children her age. When she got accepted to Starfleet and moved away, they basically told her not to come back home. Therefore, anything involving her parents is emotionally painful.

The agency had promised they would have their little girls by Christmas, but Christmas came and went. Tony was upset and thus had locked himself in the shop for the next few days, ignoring Pepper and his in-laws, having Jarvis deny everyone access to the shop but himself. It was his way of dealing with thing, hiding, being alone.
