The human soul's encounter with Christ, as depicted in the so-called Rothschild Canticles, Flanders/Rhineland, ca. 1300 (Beinecke MS 404, f. 66r)
"The miniature on f. 66r, which introduces the theme of mystical union, represents an erotically charged epiphany, more reminiscent of Bernini's St. Teresa or depictions of Zeus descending to Danäe than of any other medieval work of art. [...] The text accompanying this extraordinary miniature incorporates the invocation to the final book of Augustine's Confessions (XIII.1). The reader cries out with Augustine: 'I call you, my God, into my soul, that prepares to seize you out of the desire you have inspired within it.' [...] The Augustinian formula is embedded in a dense cento of biblical and liturgical texts that amplify its meaning. The text begins with a response from the Advent liturgy: 'God comes from Lebanon, the Holy One from the shady and thickly covered mountain.' Advent is the season of expectation; the text defines the soul's attitude of eager anticipation. The response is followed by a paraphrase of Ezekiel 16:8 and Song of Songs 1:6 in which the soul's spiritual desire is expressed in unabashedly erotic terms: "Your time came, the time of love...'"

More sorrow came upon Vilja and Kalle's mill. After Kalle's mother had passed, baby Helena followed. My help was simply not enough. Maybe I was not present enough. Maybe I was never going to be enough. Enough, enough, enough. Nothing ever is. These days we live, life is such a fragile thing.
