Si fa chiamare Nellie Bly e parte per fare il giro del mondo. E deve farlo il più velocemente possibile, deve battere Jules Verne ed il Giro del mondo in 80 giorni.

Nellie è una giornalista. Ha cominciato a scrivere quando legge un articolo sessista su un giornale e allora butta giù una lettera molto precisa ed incacchiata all’editore. Che la assume. Così scrive numerosi articoli investigativi, poi viene relegata alla pagine femminili. Allora si stufa e va a New York e convince ad assumerla in un quotidiano un signore che di nome si chiama Joseph e di cognome Pulitzer.

Accade poi che Nellie passi una notte davanti allo specchio per imparare a fare le espressioni facciali da “squilibrata”. Quindi prende una stanza in un pensionato per operaie e quando è il momento di spegnere la luce dice che non vuol dormire, che ha paura degli altri, che gli altri sono matti. La mattina dopo il proprietario dice che la matta è lei e chiama la polizia. La visitano diversi medici, lei dice che non ricorda nulla. Loro confermano che è proprio matta, “un caso senza speranza”. Così finisce internata al Lunatic Asylum al Blackwell Island, un manicomio femminile. È esattamente quello che vuole: così può raccontare la brutalità, il cibo schifoso, i topi dappertutto, i calci delle infermiere, i secchi di acqua gelida. Tutto quello che fa diventare chiunque – dopo un po’ - “matto” davvero. Lei viene liberata dal suo giornale – chissà se ha avuto paura che la lasciassero lì per sempre - e scrive il libro che inventa il giornalismo investigativo sotto copertura. Come mettere insieme Sabrina Giannini di Report e Fabrizio Gatti de L’Espresso. Si intitola 'Dieci Giorni in un Manicomio'.

Invece per fare il giro del mondo di giorni ne impiega settantadue. Più sei ore, undici minuti e quattordici secondi. È il record di circumnavigazione della terra. Attraversa l'Inghilterra, la Francia (dove incontra Jules Verne), il Canale di Suez, Ceylon, Singapore, Hong Kong e il Giappone. Passa anche da Brindisi, viaggiando sempre senza essere accompagnata da un uomo. Poi sposa un milionario. »
