There was this Disney Channel Original Movie that aired around May 1999 called The Thirteenth Year, a made-for-TV movie about a boy named Cody Griffins (Chez Starbuck) who just turned 13th and experienced unique case puberty where he grows scales and fins. It turns out that he was a merman who was accidentally left behind by his mermaid mother and raised as a regular human for the next 13 years.  Looking back at it, this movie has shown its age.  The plot is nothing special, just a cliche high school drama with your stereotypical set of students like the wimpy nerd Jess Wheatly (Justin Jon Ross), the high school girlfriend Sam (Courtnee Draper), and the jerk jock rival Sean (Tim Redwine).  There's also Big John Wheatly (Brent Briscoe), Jess's father who is out hunting for Cody's mermaid mother he saw 13 years ago as somewhat of the story's real antagonist.   But really, the only thing going for this movie is the anticipation of Cody becoming the merman and not in your usual Disney Merfolk manner where the human and fish half are clearly defined.  When Cody shows signs of becoming a merman, he grows scales and fins on his hand and arm, the first I ever seen merfolks depicted in this manner.  This blending of anatomy, combined with Cody's electric and sticky powers, created an intriguing look into the merpeople for a young impressionable me.  I really wanted to know more about this mer design until I got internet and really got a look into the unique variations of merpeople designs here.  Even still, this movie has a special place for artistic inspiration. Still the movie left more wanting than satisfaction.  While the visuals imply that Cody returned to the sea and never returned back to the land, some dialogue indicated that Cody could return to back in some form.  How that would be done was never explained but it does offer possible plots for a sequel.  Like how does the town community react to Cody's sudden absence?  What does Sean do when Cody disappears for the whole summer?  Could Cody and Sam work out their relationship in reverse-Little Mermaid scenario?  And are there more mermaid hunters around?  Sadly, no fan fiction I've read has ever captured the great speculative imagination for a hypothetical sequel... with the exception of one called The Secret Lives of Fish (A Sequel to The Thirteenth Year)  by mermaidhotty, which is thus far the only completed fan fiction work on The Thirteenth Year that explores nearly all the questions laid out by the end of the movie. That fan fiction fueled my curiosity on the hypothetical scenario of turning Sam, a normal human girl, into a mermaid. In fact, it seems to be the favorite scenario for many fans of this movie: Giving Sam fins and a tail to make her relationship work with Cody.  While it may be seen as predictable, it does make me want to see how Sam would look like as a mermaid similar to Cody.  And thus, I began this work as little curiosity exploration.  And I'm very pleased on what I've made, so much so that I decided to forgo the wait for the future #MerMay2021. The top human half was based on this promo photo from the movie since I wanted to capture the likeness of the actors as well as figuring out how long the tails should be.
