Detlaff was in prison for 10 years and he has a lot of tattoos. after he was kidnapped by illithids he uses illusion to cover them up. no one (Gale included) knows about tattoos until Act 3, when team visits prison to save Detlaff's friend - Hassan, who created those tattoos
