Flemish painter (b. 1554, Antwerpen, d. 1626, Roma)

Bril can be considered the inventor of this type of landscape painting, in which Roman ruins, depicted in great detail but often grouped together in a completely fanciful manner, are used as background for scenes from everyday life.

The painting is signed with Bril's 'monogram', a pair of eyeglasses (a play on the word 'bril', which is Dutch for spectacles).
