Manuscript list from 1715 (the year after the War of the Spanish Succession, when Catalonia was occupied by Castilla/Spain) written by the Marquis of Castelrodrigo, Spanish noble who had been appointed as General Captain of Catalonia. In this document, he lists castles and fortified houses of the Girona region of Catalonia that must be demolished (column 1), that must be preserved for their strategic use for the Spanish army (column 2), and which ones they have already demolished (column 3).

The demolition of castles, fortifications, palaces, and houses was part of the economical and political punishment against Catalonia “by right of conquest”, as the Spanish king Philip V always said. All Catalonia was militarized by the Spanish army to establish their control and avoid the expected Catalan uprising. In this moment, the Spanish army destroyed many historical heritage buildings in Catalonia, including burning down over 20 towns and cities and forcing the inhabitants of Barcelona’s most populated neighbourhood to demolish their own homes, shops, and religious and historical landmarks to make space for Europe’s largest military citadel.
