TDWP-Mirandy fic idea

What if, in an AU where Andy is already a reporter when she meets Miranda (maybe they stumble into each other in a restaurant, maybe Nigel sets them up on a blind date like in fountainpen's 'someone new' - that's also a great story, btw), she doesn't know that Miranda is famous while they are dating? Like, at all?

Miranda, of course, assumes that she does, and doesn't call her on it when Andy 'pretends' that she has no idea what she does - thinks maybe this is Andy's idea of fairness when it comes to small-talk, or that Nigel might have told her not to fawn over her all fan meets celebrity style. She tells Andy she's an editor, and what she has to do at work, but not for what magazine, not that she's so well known.

Andy never looks her up online, thinks that'd be a bit creepy - she knows she hopes her dates don't Google her, there are some gruesome high-school pictures of science fair winners where she still has braces if you dig deep enough under 'Andrea Sachs', and while interesting in her opinion, many of the articles under 'Andy Sachs' aren't exactly first date material.

She never finds out who Miranda is from her friends, either - just tells them she's seeing an older woman who works for a magazine which 'makes their jobs similar enough that they have something to talk about but different enough that they don't often stumble into each other for work, which is probably for the best because I still stumble over my words for a bit whenever I see her', and maybe her first name comes up or maybe not but if yes it's not enough to ring any bells, and they can't tell her that she should really, really look her girlfriend up online.

It all comes to a head when they are going on a date somewhere in public after there is some fashion-related news or scandal that apparently, paparazzi want to ask Miranda about - Andy doesn't realize the papz are there for Miranda, just takes her hand and tries to pull her away from the chaos, and of course moments later the question change to who is this, are you gay, secret affair, ice queen melting enough to hold hands, and Miranda pulls Andy with her into the town car she had arrived in, and Andy is freaking out - first Miranda just thinks it's because of her first taste of the paparazzi - which, certainly, Andréa had to expect to happen at some point, with all those public outings she had planned for them? - but then Andy asks her what the hell that was, who the hell she is, and Miranda can just stare as she realizes that Andy really doesn't know who she is, and hope that she hasn't fucked up the best thing that happened to her in years beyond repair.

(They manage to fix it, of course, after some shouting and tears they finally figure out where they went wrong, and in the end, Andy can actually laugh about how oblivious she had been – how oblivious they had both been, really. She’s still annoyed at the press, but Miranda is worth dealing with all of it.)
