BEEF UP THE BRAKE…
Shinya’s been working on his 1915 Indian using his spare time to upgrade and reinforce the entire brake system for upcoming cross-country ride. Of course, he did it for the last Cannonball too but the rear brake, the only brake, wore out during the run and it tortured him the entire second half of the race. So he thought through various things and he arrived at this.
次回の大陸横断に向けて、趣味の時間と称して1915年インディアンをいじくっている木村氏。今はブレーキ強化に力を注いでいる。もちろん前回のキャノンボール前にもやったつもりだけど、早々に効きが持続しなくなり後半はブレーキ問題だけで (他にも山ほど問題が発生する中で😭) 倍以上神経がすり減って後半は泣きに泣いた。今思い出しても心が掻き乱される。でもおかげでもっと色んなことを想定して新たな作戦にたどり着いた。まさしく命がけで得た答えとはこのこと。
For the rear, Shinya used a brake off of 70s Yamaha. And he added a supporting brake in front using a small brake off of 70s Yamaha YZ80, modified it to have 4 bearings. He made them not to disturb the antique motorcycle look and surprisingly, they don’t.
Even if it works well, Shinya doesn't want to put on super modern brake as it is that stands out too much or having unbalanced function between old body and hightech parts. However, putting super cool looking brake that doesn’t do its job, is meaningless. Shinya wouldn't mind sparing effort to have it both, form and function. And that also leads to his mind when he customizes other motorcycles. Sometimes it’s tough but balancing them out is very important to get a motorcycle fun to ride with and has the shape you want at the same time.
リアには70年代のヤマハのブレーキを流用。今回はフロントにも小さなサポートブレーキを付けることに。こちらは70年代か80年代初期のYZ80より拝借、ベアリングを4個入るように加工。ヤマハさまさま。なぜか見た目に違和感がない。その旨を伝えると、どちらもアンティークオートバイに付けていても浮かないように工夫してんだから当たり前だばかやろー的なことを表現はもう少しソフトタッチだけどかなり冷たく言われた。いつものことだけど失礼しました💦
それにしても、めちゃくちゃ効くからってスーパーモダンブレーキをそのままつけるなんてしたくない。(見た目の違和感もあるし、他のパーツが古いままのオートバイに一部分だけ最新のものをつけてもそれが仇となる場合多しだし)かと言ってどんなに見た目が格好良いものでも機能性が悪いならオートバイとして意味がない。雰囲気を壊さないよう見た目を上手くカスタムするか、工夫して機能性をあげるのか、いずれにしても手間暇のかかることだけど、バランス感覚と経験を存分に活かして、これぞ腕の見せどころなんじゃないか、と筆者は勝手に思っている。本人に聞いてみたら、それはこのインディアンだけに限らず、常日頃からそういう機能と形のバランスを考えて自分の中でせめぎ合っているんだって。
