I've Never Heard of this Comic
I'll never own this one, issue #1. They are crazy expensive and this auction has one day to go😳
The final pages of "Bouncing Betsys," MAN COMICS Issue 14. Story by Hank Chapman, Art by Jerry Robinson. Incredible stuff: this unit finds itself in the middle of a minefield full of spring-loaded "bouncing Betsys" that pop out of the ground to spray shrapnel at gut level. One jerk panics and gets everyone else killed. The end. That's it. Peak death comics from early 1952 when Atlas war titles were white hot and Chapman, Stan Lee, et al were firing lethal riffs on any war-based concept they could come up with. The same issue has a story where some dumb foul-up gets transferred repeatedly and worries over whether he'll find a place in the army. He finds it: the patch of land occupied by his corpse. In a bookend complementing "Bouncing Betsys" we get "Screaming Meemies," in which loud high-pitched mortar shells freak out our boys until they storm a Red position to silence the gun. They win, but they all die. It's all thrillingly appalling. These things are more horrific than most horror comics of the era, without the horror-host snark. And there's a lot more to see yet.
