Not much when you’re as poor as we are.
The boys have moved past the 🧸 saga to one about making money for Christmas presents which leads them to a job in ‘treacherous waters’ so to speak and a certain someone makes a return. I’m splitting this into two parts.
Scene 1: The boys are in a quandary about getting pressies for Sarah and, according to Andy ‘Jack will kill us if we ain’t gotten her something.’ Unfortunately they’re skint so the only option is potentially getting a job. ‘There must be somewhere we could earn a bit of money.’
Andy: Watcha get women for Christmas?
Robert: Not much when you’re as poor as we are.
Scene 2: Sarah is complaining to Vic about getting the paper late, for the third time that week. Viv shows up ‘just nice to see’ her ‘looking’ her ‘usual self’ according to Sarah, not dressing down to deliver the papers. Sarah gets a good barb or two in until Viv hits low.
Viv: We don’t all choose to slop about in dumpy shoes and second-hand cardigans.
Vic: Viv!
Sarah: But then all that glitters isn’t gold. Is it, Vic?
Viv: Let’s face it. You wouldn’t turn heads even if you did dress half decent. Turn stomachs maybe. (Oh Viv, she has more class in her picky than you entirely. She’s dressed posh before getting with Jack and turned more than enough heads).
Scene 3: It’s after school and the boys are checking jobs outside the post office and spot one for a paper boy. Viv is her usual snooty self toward them when she sees them lingering outside.
Robert: The Windsors aren’t going to give you a job working for them.
Andy: Why not?
Robert: You know why. If you’re gonna ask, don’t ask her.
Vic isn’t interested in giving Andy the job because of Donna but she assures him they are now mates again and that ‘it was ages ago.’
Andy: We’re wondering about the ad in the window about the paper boy. When can I start?
Vic: You’ve go a nerve, aren’t ya? You think I’ll give you a job after what you did to Donna?
Robert: We didn’t do anything.
