VERSE OF THE DAY for 8 Oct 2021
For the misery of the needy and for the groaning of the poor, I will now arise, says [saith] the Lord. I will set them [him] in safety; I will deal boldly on their behalf [by him]. ( 1Clem 15:6, 1891 Lightfoot updated )
NOTES ON 1-2 Clement
Only the first of these letters (1Clem) is likely St. Clement's, written when he was the fourth bishop of Rome and addressing the church in Corinth (Greece). The second (2Clem) is now usually recognized as an ancient homily (sermon) later associated with Clement. Both are included in various Biblical codices.
Clement has been associated with St. Peter the Apostle from the very early days of the Church -- a strain of the faith that runs in parallel with Pauline Christianity. The Acts of the Apostles is notable, for example, in focusing on Peter and Paul in succession (Acts 2-12 + 13-28) as the Church moved into the wider world.
VERSE OF THE DAY for 6 Aug 2021
Therefore, it is right for us to pay attention [give heed] to so great and so many examples and to give up [submit the neck] and being obedient [occupying the place of obedience], to take our side with those [them] who [that] are the leaders of our souls, that ceasing from this foolish dissension, we may achieve [attain unto] the goal that truly lies before us [which lieth before us in truthfulness], avoiding [keeping aloof from] every fault. ( 1Clem 63:1, 1891 Lightfoot updated )
