We’re gonna hold a Referendum in 2 weeks (October 1st) here in Catalonia to see if we want to be an independent state or if we still want to remain in Spain. Everything would be fine if it wasn’t because the news for the past 3 weeks have been crazy. Some of what happened:
- The Spanish Government and media tried to blame the Catalan police (Mossos) for letting the terrorist attack in the middle of August in Barcelona happen
- Them also tried to blame the Catalan government for “only focusing on the referendum” instead of our citizens’ security
- Unionist-leaning newspaper fabricated notes “sent by the CIA” to the Mossos (not only is this false, but it would break the chain of command). Almost all Spanish media covered this “story” even after the newspaper that made this up changed the story THREE TIMES in the span of a few days (because there were serious hints that the note was false)
- The Spanish POLICE stirred up drama because they felt left out and, said in their words: the Catalan police and Government’s actions made them look “self-sufficient” in the eyes of the world
- The Spanish Government still NOT INCLUDING the Catalan police on EUROPOL (even after the attack), and not giving much information regarding terrorism, even if they finally agreed to include them in the counter-terrorism unit (finally!)
- The Constitutional Court put almost immediately on hold the referendum and the judicial transiency laws
- The Constitutional Court (no separation of powers btw) notified the director of the Catalan public TV (TV3) that he’d face consequences if he (the TV) promoted anything that helped in the organisation of the referendum
- A judge (again, no separation of powers) banned an act in support of the referendum that was gonna be held in Madrid (you know, outside of Catalonia)
- 712 mayors from Catalonia (about 75% of the towns and cities on the region) have been called to testify just because they support the referendum
- They’ve registered printeries and a newspaper just in case they had something to do with the referendum
- Local police have been ordered to try to stop the referendum from happening (no this isn’t Turkey or Iraq, this is Spain)
- A judge has shut down the official referendum website (the government has already opened a couple more)
Again, this isn’t about laws or what text was voted 40 years ago says. This is about democracy (legitimacy > legality), voting, and respecting everyone’s rights.
You wanna vote? Vote (yes or no). You don’t wanna vote? Don’t vote. But don’t try to pretend you’re “protecting democracy” if you’re taking away my right to vote. I’m not a child, and I’m gonna vote. This is bigger than you or me or the Constitution. Laws change, human rights don’t.
