sometimes (one time) you miscalculate mileage (and the time to walk that mileage) and end up walking an hour in the dark.

on the plus side, i saw: the shadow of the hills falling across the landscape as the sun set. I wonder if the people down there realize that the dusk-shadow that sets upon them every evening is cast by the hills to their west.

i saw: a creature drop out of the air above me to dodge away from a crow, its body folded tight and brown in the grasses just beside the trail, easy to overlook and just the same color as some of the fallen leaves. I touched it with the my hiking pole, saw the small inhale-exhale along its bck, and determined it to be a bat. what a lovely red-rust color. and just the size of a hamster.

i saw: in the distance: car-glow, window-glow, star-glow as the night set in.

i saw: walking through the shadows: it's enough moonlight to see by, mostly, but the particulars are vague, and when I went under the trees it was so dark I placed my feet purely by the trust in the shape of the groomed trail, and the feel of it under the points of my poles. stepping on that which I cannot see.

i saw: a jogger wearing a headlamp overtake me, then turn back and pass me again.

sunset truly is sunrise in reverse... I've been up the dark trail before the dawn, doing that same walk-by-trust-exercise, seeing a runner across the valley by the bob of a single headlamp light, seeing the light slowly fill the sky, then the shadows withdrawn. it's the same, played backwards.
