While his recent passing was sad, I am not and have not been much of a fan of the works of I. M. Pei. His designs imposed two disasters near the National Mall in Washington DC - on the south side the L’Enfant Plaza ground plan, of which more in a later post, and the East Building of the National Gallery of Art on the north side of the Mall.
As a huge piece of abstract sculpture, the East Building is a fascinating work. As a museum it is a disaster. Despite great expense and luxurious materials, vast and all but useless interior spaces lead to cramped and oddly shaped galleries where acute corners make display and viewing of larger paintings and sculptures a challenge, important as the building is mostly used for 20th century works which are often large. Its circulation patterns are bizarre in the extreme, incomprehensible to casual visitors and quite hostile to visitors with mobility problems. The building was poorly constructed in the 1970s and has required a massive amount of restoration work after pieces of the exterior cladding began to spall off in the early 21st century. With slight success there have also been expensive efforts to make the galleries and circulation patterns more art work and viewer friendly. It offers a pathetic comparison with the West Building whose design, a most conservative one based on the history and experience of art museums elsewhere, works wonderfully for the display of paintings of all sizes and for the rather small collection of older sculpture the museum possesses.
