With The Lights Out
Today marks the 20’th anniversary of the releasing of the revolutionary album that changed the course of music history. The album that slapped Michael jackson’s glittery gloves off the number one spot on the Billboard charts. The album that defines a new breed of generation.
We never saw it coming, and neither did these three Seattle guys, who at that time, just wanted to make an album and that’s it. Then, it hit them. From one copy to another, spreading like wildfire across America, these guys never wanted to conquer the world. They just want to strum the guitar, bang the drums as loud as possible, hover some basslines, snatch a pre-adolescent deodorant brand for a song title, and record it. Nevermind if listen to the first four chords of the songs, then spit on the dollar-reaching, face-smirking baby on the album cover, or internalize every word and live by it. The latter happened.
From there, Nirvana’s Nevermind slowly created a self-sustaining force that is so powerful, it destroyed the walls of the then pretentiously elite popular music of the 90’s. So influential, every song from the album became an anthem of the unnoticed. And just as Nirvana refuses to hold the world on to its hand, Kurt, Krist and Dave did it.
20 years had passed, the boy on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind has now grown (and so as his “dollar bill”), Krist Novoselic is now a politician, and is losing a lot of hair, Dave Grohl fronts for his iconic band, Foo Fighters, Courtney Love is, well, being Courtney. And Kurt Cobain is now playing in Rock & Roll heaven. But the decibel level of Nevermind’s legacy never faltered. All hail Nirvana… Here we are, now entertain us!
