My article about pretty much what happened at last week's TEETH REUNION CONCERT!
Kapuso, Kapamilya, Kapatid, Kabarkada, Kamag-anak, Kaaway, Kakupalan!
mindjuice overload #1
I want you and I need you but then I hate you and I despise you.
I'm standing at your doorstep, marking your life with ungrateful hues.
Checking in, walking out. Try not look back,
hear the marching band as they lead you to your eerie flashbacks
Orange light, it never goes out of sight.
strangle and untangle the blissful smoke. Puffing a thick hit for your last gush of hope.
Who will save this mythical box of short-lived memories for all its worth?
Spare me some golden coins, spare me a familiar tone
the flying dogs are here, whispering your name, I won't be here for long.
Orange sight, she holds your nonexistent light.
Things I would say to my 12-year old self
May ginawa kang mali kaya nila nagawa yun.
Huwag kang matakot makipag-away.
At pagsisisihan mo iyon.

"It goes fast, you think of the past. Suddenly, everything has changed." -The Flaming Lips, Suddenly Everything Has Changed
Funny how a simple series of sentences could ruin everything. Drunk text, that is. Heck, it's even funnier how a plain and honest statement, regardless if the thought is alcohol-infused or not, could blast a deadly backfire and kill the one thing that what's left in you. DIGNITY.
And now, I'm facing the harsh reality of (potentially) being avoided, ridiculed and/or judged behind my back because of a stupid drunk text. Indeedee, alcohol and cellphone don't mix. Anyway, I'm drinking more! CHEERS!
it's easy to write something. It's difficult to write something "great".
Currently telling/urging myself to write something, but my brain tells me not to do so. Because the thought of writing my own thoughts is too complex.
I was on the verge of giving up. But then, I had an epiphany!
“I should watch the remaining 4 episodes of Happy Endings Season 2 instead.”
And that’s how it ended.
A salute to The King
“A lot of people hail him as the king, he just wants to be a jester,”
-Epi Quizon
The name, “DOLPHY”, became synonymous with comedy when a lone skinny teenager decided to take the centerstage to show the world that a simple comic relief can make a difference. Indeed, if laughter is the best medicine, he's the alchemist who discovered the universal cure for every Filipino's chronic sadness. For 6 decades, this man’s personal mission is to draw an uplifting curve from one face to another by all means necessary. From “Sa Isang Sulyap Mo Tita” all the way to “Father Jejemon”, all he wanted was to reach one simple goal, and that is to entertain us.
For us, Filipinos, Dolphy is considered one of the greatest kings ever set foot on Philippine entertainment. But for him, he’s just the lone jester. The clown. The joker. And as far as everyone knows, being a clown ain’t walk in the park. For he has to set aside and endure bottled up emotions so that his audience would barely notice any of his own shortcomings. And not even a series of controversies and heartaches could stop this man from throwing punchlines after punchlines until he sends everyone grasping for precious air out of sheer amusement and laughter. This man is so dedicated to his craft, that he takes comedy very seriously. Ask any simple Juan De La Cruz who grew up watching John En Marsha and Home Along Da Riles. One who does not haul a sudden burst of laughter the moment he sees this man as he pulls off his classic antics is a travesty.
But sadly, every show must come to an end. A curtain call, if you may. And up to his final breath, he sees to it that everyone who knows him as “the king of comedy” receives a last gag to cherish for the rest of their lives. While this man bows for the last time, he’s on his way to see who’s behind the gleaming spotlight.
Hats off to you, Sir Dolphy!
go on, ignore this!
Kill the pinch from my middle region,
indecision may grant you salvation.
Can we cut and break loose?
Chances are 50/50, separate the good from the bad news.
Shotgun rides,
neon signs.
Off to oblivionland
How about shoot me instead,
We can all be normal again just by putting this misery outta my head.
day by day, little by little.
Malaya
1320. Where all great bands are born...
It was only until 2005 when I first step into that dark hole-in-the-wall bar along Espanya. The scene was as typical as your average rock joint: smoky atmosphere, beer bottles everywhere, that familiar smell of sisig mixed with the overwhelming aroma of urine, sweat, vomit and what-not from the bathroom’s over-flowing toilet. Tripnotic waiters, kuya Oca sits still by the bar entrance, and of course, the resident “tambays”. Majority of which came from nearby schools, struggling to survive hour after hour of submitting plates while shugging down their warm and stale beer. The only difference is this rock joint usually starts the day, and I mean literally, “DAY” at 10:00 AM.
Indeed, what better place to stay than being in a poorly ventilated enclosure that looked like an abandoned beer house. If you’ll ask me, I’d rather stay in this hole than being stuck in a sophisticated super-club with a bunch of spoiled brats and pseudo-fashionistas (unless you’re Tim Yap, you’re good to go regardless if you’re wearing a shitty election-campaign shirt from your friendly nuisance presidential candidate). For this hole-in-the-wall does the other way around. I mean, where in the world you would find a bar that welcomes both sando and slipper peeps despite the ridiculously misleading “no sandos and slippers allowed” outside the bar entrance. What’s more, where can you find a bar that allows you to stay the whole day without even ordering a single plate of nuts? Or allowing students to slack, cram and finish their projects while downing 3 bottles of Red Horse in broad daylight? And where else can you find a place that showcases top-notch homegrown bands?
True to its tagline, “where all great bands are born”, this rocker's nest has bore and molded a lot of talented offspring, making them Espanya’s own sons and daughters. Sadly, the days of child-bearing are finally over. Like mothers, and for lack of better words, this place has reached the winter of its menopausal stage. For the past 25 solid years, plus 3 more, this canteen-turned-rock joint has sheltered numerous bands, and tremendously helped famous acts launch their musical careers, from the likes of Cocojam, Color It Red, The Jerks, Eraserheads, Rivermaya to Join The Club, Imago, Kamikazee, Sandwich, Greyhoundz, Queso, and Parokya Ni Edgar to name a few. Amateurs and professional musicians alike, this place became their mothership and has gladly offered its roof to achieve one common goal: To play music. Or perhaps, to become one of the so-called “greats”.
I’ve had my fair share of triumphs and failures in this very place. Along with the countless sabaw gigs, beat-up drum kits, grounded amps, inaudible mics, crazy-ass crowd, it is safe to say that these were indeed, the fun times. For that, the least I can do is to thank you. As I’ve said before, ”For those days that I’m here and for those times spent, everything was all worth the waste.”
Thank you for providing us the space to vent our yearnings, loud growls, afternoon musings, beer breaks, and most of all, for letting us express ourselves through our music. All of these will be greatly missed.
This is our homecourt.
Long you may run, Mayric’s/Sazi’s Bar.
Runaway train
Rush hour…
Johnoy Danao: Kahapon
Pretty much sums up everything.
Where are you?
You are in the Philippines. And this is THE REAL WORLD.
Where technological revolution shuts out family values, destroys quality time and the corruption of mind is common. TV becomes your altar, soap operas and teleseryes are more relevant than news and current events, game consoles and iPads are your companion, Willie and TVJ are considered as powerful gods, and all of us are slowly becoming a bunch of zombie slaves being controlled by our own work computer.
Where lies become the truth, and the truth becomes a lie. Our taxes are working for us by means of luxury cars, P20,000 dinner in New York, extravagant mansions, unnecessary travels and other unexplained wealth. Not to mention, those paid ghost employees working for our local officials. That’s why every election season, our trusty government ensures that our vote really counts… TWICE.
Where pollution becomes our daily scent. Dust as pressed powder. Garbage as garden landscapes. We are all situated in a branded town where various initials and names of your duly-elected government officials are embedded on every lamp posts, walls, park benches, tarpaulins, even schools. And this ain’t Banana Republic’s fault.
Where fashion becomes our identity. Your personality is based on how well can you pull up (or down) a pair of baggy pants, loose shirts, Supra shoes, dyed hair and rainbow-colored caps.
Where landing a decent job equates to almost impossible for the ironic reason of lacking work experience. That’s why a question still runs in my mind. “How are we suppose to get that so-called ‘work experience' if you won’t give us the chance to land a decent job?”
Where a simple “YES or NO” question can now be answered with a series of incoherent and complex sentences. Very showbiz-y. So don’t bother asking why our leaders adapted this kind of style in answering questions. Our government is infested with award-winning celebrities and compulsive liars.
Where the separation of the church and the state is nonexistent. An explanation why Bro. Eddie Villanueva, Robert Reyes, Gaudencio Rosales, Ed Panlilio, and sometimes, even the pope wants to get some piece of the action. Or maybe they just want to make the world a better place. Maybe not.
Where the president’s love life, smoking habits and receding hairline is far more important than giving food, shelter, clothing and livelihood to the poor.
Where politics is the most profitable business venture, next to call centers.
Where basic human rights is defined by how much money you have in your pocket and how influential your family is. Countess bodies of journalists and ordinary citizens are all around the place, as well as political activists still being held and detained without any warrant or formal case charged against them. All of whom are being stripped off of their freedom and the right to live, whilst the actual hooligans are still on the loose. Or let’s just say they’re currently “doing their time” at the comfort of their own rest house and/or VIP prison cells.
Doesn’t ring any bell? Google Maps…
365 DAYS OF HOME OF "NO" ROCK
Sunday, a typical day for people to rest, a day for families to spend time, an ordinary day for every religious lolos and lolas to renew their faith, common day for every ‘cooks’ to get their weekly dose of mid morning cooking shows, surely, a normal day for those die hard Jake Cuenca-Melissa Ricks fans to get a glimpse of their seemingly sweet, heartfelt, effortless lip-synching number on ASAP. Yes, this is what you get on a plain Sunday. Except for this one unforgettable Sunday of November 7th, 2010. Not this one. It was a Sunday for every decibel freaks who glued their ears and radio frequency to the far right side of the dial. For every self proclaimed and devoted rock afficionado, this is an important day in history, this is “the day our Music died”.
A funny thing happened while thinking of what to write for this entry. Juan Dela Cruz’s Ang Himig Natin was playing on my iPod, one of those farewell songs played on NU during its Last Goodbye stretch. As the song fades, a small voice like that of an eight year-old echoed inside the FX. Then, it goes louder. And louder. And louder until it came clear to my senses. “WIN RADIO! WIN RADIO!”. Ahhhh, IRONY, what a way to start my day. And then, it hit me, as vivid flashbacks of that very day NU bid goodbye to its legion of fans, savoring every note of Eraserheads’ Ang Huling El Bimbo. A striking thought. “Masa indeed killed the Rockstar”. Or maybe not.
So, after a year, what happens next? Since the closure of NU, it seemed that the air time for OPM has decreased to a rough 40%. And I’m not just talking about rock music, but OPM in general. It seems inevitable, the future of music here in The Philippines already lies at the hands of the MASA revolution. Where infectious fake laughter and ancient jokes are the perfect antidote for a society that is poisoned by broken promises and false hopes. We can’t blame the “panggas” and the “Ka-barangays” if they choose to get their minute by minute fix of “tot-tot-tot’s” and “Hi Pangga” over Ely Buendia and Sonic Youth. Neither the radio stations and the DJs, from whom by day and night, play a string of hits starting from REO Speedwagon down to Bette Midler for every Cobra dependent late night drivers and security guards. What can I say, it is the least a radio station could do to mend the struggles of a simple Juan’s everyday life.
My only complaint? aside from giving you the worst case of LSS from the station’s jingle, come on, do you really have to invade every frequency on the radio dial? If my math serves me right, 9 out 27 active frequencies on your radio are the same MASA themed stations, which gives you a sweet 35% chance of catching a “MEH GANON”-esque style of radio commentary. Alongside, the immense popularity of the lyrically challenging K-POP mania, To be clear, it’s not the jokes and the all time favorite videoke playlist that bothers me. It is the OPM industry that I am worried about. The way I see it, it’s no longer a far fetched thought that OPM could possibly lose its essence, in a way that musicians will settle for a good David Pomeranz cover instead of writing new materials, out of fear of not being able to market themselves.
Is it really about the money? From my perspective, the sad truthful answer is YES. This is a common thing in Philippine entertainment. In an industry where acting skills are no longer a major pre-requisite. As long as you get to be a part of a reality show and your looks can make a swarm of 14-year old screaming kids pee their pants, you can be already considered as a Bankable actor/actress. Relatively, recording companies don’t give a shit anymore if the artistry, when it comes to music, is being compromised. Just do a Lady Gaga acoustic cover, you’re good to go. What they don’t see is, if those recording artists who virtually cover every song in your old-maid aunt’s Multiplex collection can be bankable, why can’t those underrated musicians with exceptional talents who sow their own seeds out of sheer passion for the music? If half of the population thinks Willie can sing (which is clearly not the case), or Manny Pacquiao can get a recording deal overseas, how about Noel Cabangon or Dong Abay, or APO Hiking Society? Heck, even a recording company can easily place their bet on Anne Curtis instead of getting a straight up deal with the likes of Cooky Chua and Cynthia Alexander. Granted, Anne is oh, so hot… But still! Heaven forbid, I will put my love for music to rest and exile myself to some remote area for soul searching if Manny Pacquiao gets a shot of doing a Barry Manillow double CD tribute album.
Which brings me to another remarkable question/reaction I’ve read here on Tumblr, asked by musician, Shinji Manlangit;
“I mean, why can’t these fuckers write songs?… I mean, it’s that easy. Oh, but who gives a shit about writing songs when doing an acoustic cover of a Justin Bieber song is a guaranteed sell. And you bitches say that OPM is dying.”
True enough. Which is why I sincerely hope the future army of musicians, enthusiasts and advocates would pick up and continue where NU has left off as far as Pinoy music and talent is concern. Much appreciation to those who still pursue to promote our music by any means possible, from gigs/events to a simple gesture of those radio stations/webcasts to allot at least an hour of their air time for an all Pinoy segment.
It’s been a year since NU107 closed its doors to every hormonal kid who pictured himself kissing and romancing Dylan and Jaedee to the tune of Siakol’s Lakas Tama, to those musician who aspired to play at the Rock Awards. To every devoted rockjocks who became our weekly slaves just to play the music we loved the best. NU may have lost its battle to the MASA power, However, it doesn’t suggest that the MASA stations killed our choice of music. It’s just that artists nowadays may still need a little time to realize what they can do more other than using someone else’s song. Or maybe the simple Juan’s are not yet ready to explore other forms of music outside Air Supply and April Boy Regino.
365 1/4 days without NU, I can still remember every word on their top of the hour spiel by heart. For me, it is still far more contagious than those of Mr. Fu’s. MEH GANUN?

With The Lights Out
Today marks the 20’th anniversary of the releasing of the revolutionary album that changed the course of music history. The album that slapped Michael jackson’s glittery gloves off the number one spot on the Billboard charts. The album that defines a new breed of generation.
We never saw it coming, and neither did these three Seattle guys, who at that time, just wanted to make an album and that’s it. Then, it hit them. From one copy to another, spreading like wildfire across America, these guys never wanted to conquer the world. They just want to strum the guitar, bang the drums as loud as possible, hover some basslines, snatch a pre-adolescent deodorant brand for a song title, and record it. Nevermind if listen to the first four chords of the songs, then spit on the dollar-reaching, face-smirking baby on the album cover, or internalize every word and live by it. The latter happened.
From there, Nirvana’s Nevermind slowly created a self-sustaining force that is so powerful, it destroyed the walls of the then pretentiously elite popular music of the 90’s. So influential, every song from the album became an anthem of the unnoticed. And just as Nirvana refuses to hold the world on to its hand, Kurt, Krist and Dave did it.
20 years had passed, the boy on the cover of Nirvana’s Nevermind has now grown (and so as his “dollar bill”), Krist Novoselic is now a politician, and is losing a lot of hair, Dave Grohl fronts for his iconic band, Foo Fighters, Courtney Love is, well, being Courtney. And Kurt Cobain is now playing in Rock & Roll heaven. But the decibel level of Nevermind’s legacy never faltered. All hail Nirvana… Here we are, now entertain us!
