2012 Phenomenon - The Day the World Was Supposed to End
happy 10th anniversary to the end of the world
Ten years ago this very day, something peculiar happened.
When the 21st of December 2012 came along, the sun rose, it hung around in the sky for several hours, and then it set. The sky was dark for a considerable time, and then it was the 22nd. But for whatever reason, many people thought the world was coming to an end.
It was all over the internet, people were making comments and theories about the wildly different ways the apocalypse was going to go down this Winter Solstice, heck, there was even a big budget summer movie about it! And all of this, funnily enough, was based off what was basically a thousand-year-old calendar from Central America.
Now, I came to realise all this was a load of hooey (I even made 20 whole reasons why it likely wouldn’t happen… half of which were clearly joke answers), but I couldn’t help but feel tense on that day all that time ago. Sure, I knew for sure that the whole “end of the world” stuff wasn’t founded on any concrete evidence… But whose to say that it would just happen anyway?
It’s been 10 years since the world allegedly ended, and we’re all still here. Well, in a general sense, at least. People have died, people have been born, presidents and prime ministers have shuffled round, trends have come and gone, but by and large, The world as we know it is still intact.
So many people really thought everything was going to end in 2012, in so many different ways, but we lived to see the start of 2013, and we eventually lived to see 2022, ten years on. Sure, you could say that things got worse in the 2010s, but things were still pretty weird in the 2000s. (or maybe they weren’t, I wasn’t paying enough attention to world politics then)
The point I’m ultimately trying to make is that even if things are looking bleak and you can’t seem to find hope anywhere, know that people thought the very same thing not too long ago, and we’ve survived those times. We’re not just enduring, we’re persisting, constantly fighting for a better world.
That’s just what Humanity does, isn’t it? Our civilisation’s been around for ten thousand years, we’re not going to let it just vanish overnight! Sure, Climate Change and Capitalism and War and all that bad stuff is on the rise, but there’s also people who are protesting against them, who want to see a better world, and are willing to fight for it!
I know this might sound Naïve. Uninformed and idiotic, even. How can I preach such positivity when bad things are still happening? And that’s kind of the thing. People thought it was all coming to an end in 2012. If the apocalypse happened, there would be little we could do to prevent it. Now, people are still talking about the end of the world, or at least a gradual worsening of the world, but this time, we can fight against it!
It'll be a long, arduous path, and things might get worse before they get better, but I refuse to believe that our actions will ultimately be in vain. We can and will change this world for the better.
I guess we’ll find out if we made a difference when 2032 rolls around.
My birthday is cursed lemme tell you why
Ok, so I was born on 12-21-2002
Yea I know a lot of fuckin 2’s.
ANYWAY, on my 10th Bday was the whole “the world’s gonna end” phenomenon
THEN ON THE DAY I TURNED 18 FUCKING YEARS OLD, THIS SHIT HAPPENS AND YOU WONT BE ABLE TO SEE IT THIS CLEARLY FOR ANOTHER 800 YEARS
Happy 7 year anniversary of the world not ending!
