Hey, so admittedly I haven't read all of your analyses on the HTTYD movie franchise, but something I haven't seen brought up AT ALL so far is how the alterations on Hiccup and Toothless between the first and second film bring them much closer together visually. Hiccup has grown into himself to better match Toothless, and now they both have the primary colors of black and brown with a touch of red. Hiccup even has buckles on his forearms to match Toothless' legs! I found this really (1/2)

 (2/2) interesting, considering how the other characters were very visually similar to their dragons from the start. The other riders have their dragons shown as more an extension of themselves, whereas Toothless and Hiccup were introduced as individuals. Anyway, I wanted to hear your thoughts on this, if you have time, because it’s something no-one seems to have brought to attention. Thanks!

*big happy excited bounces* I love this a lot. You make some beautiful observations that constitute a lovely analysis as it is. I love what you say about the fact that the other youths are already physically similar to their dragons; Astrid has Nadder spikes, Fishlegs has Meatlug’s huskiness, and the twins have two heads. But Hiccup and Toothless are very visually different in the first movie despite the fact these two relate on incredibly monumental levels.

From an out-of-universe meta perspective, Hiccup’s design is supposed to be that of a very ordinary looking boy. He’s not supposed to look like a dragon killer whatsoever, but rather a hapless kid falling short of Viking standards. This sets up the idea in the first movie that Hiccup is distinct from his beefy, warring tribe members.

Toothless’ design, on the other hand, is modeled after a panther’s. The designers wanted Toothless to appear mysterious, something initially incredibly ominous. That’s quite different from how they wanted to visualize Hiccup! Consequently, boy and dragon don’t look very much alike.

But we see that Hiccup wants to associate himself incredibly closely with Toothless. This dragon-insane boy starts designing his clothing to match his dragon so that they appear visually like the team they psychologically already are. I talk a bit about how Hiccup designs himself to look like Toothless here and especially here. It’s downright freakishly awesome.
