Favourite Albums of 2015
Nothing like leaving it to the last minute. In my holiday haste, I rushed to hear a bunch of albums I’ve been meaning to listen to for a while, but maybe that rush was pointless for the most part, because only one of those made my top 10. Just a music obsessed fan with some haphazard thoughts and potentially confusing opinions. Enjoy! Let’s get into it.
10. Wilco - Star Wars... When I first heard about this, I thought it would be some kind of “leftovers” album, and maybe it is to a certain extent, but it’s got everything I enjoy about Wilco. Loved the surprise, “here’s our gift to you” aspect, too. As with most of their albums, it wasn’t immediately impressive to me, but I certainly settled into its grooves, and I’m sure it will continue to grow on me.
9. Destroyer - Poison Season... Dan Bejar is always weird and wonderful. His lyrics make you ask yourself, “did he just say that?”, then of course you have to go back and listen again. That definitely works in his favour. I think the same song appears on this album three times, all at different tempos with slightly different arrangements. There’s a song that would fit right in with Springsteen’s rowdiest, some New York lounge/jazz/piano softies, some funky bass, some Bowie influence, and a song that sounds like it could be the theme for a 70′s cop show. All over the place, all in one place, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Now that I think about it, why didn’t I put this higher? 8. Kurt Vile - B’lieve I’m Goin’ Down... I don’t remember this album giving me much warning. All of a sudden, it was out, and then I didn’t really listen to it until this past weekend. It starts off as you would expect, which is great, because I’ve liked his previous work, but then my ears really perked up with ‘Life Like This’. The piano tracks really stand out to me, because I always think of him as a guitar guy. When that first listen catches you, you know it’s good. 7. Terra Lightfoot - Every Time My Mind Runs Wild... Great rock record. Great guitar player. Excellent for road trips, since I’m still big on discs, and this was one we were quick to pop in while driving through the maritimes. Saw her live, just her and her guitar, and while I had initially hoped it would be a full band show, she still blew us away. A powerful presence. 6. Racoon Bandit - Close Your Eyes... Prince Edward Island’s folk rock Beatles, or Prince Edward Island’s Crazy Horse, or a combination of both? But with nice little surprises in there. These songs have great melodies, which take unexpected turns, but in the absolute best way. It’s hard to explain, since they kind of turned me on my head, but the position actually seems comfortable when I’m listening to this. It’s all good, but Scott’s song is lovely, and ‘Just Passing Through’ is wayyyy more than just a theme to the web series. Amazing lyrics with a beautiful perspective on life itself. We all hope someone saw us passing through.
5. Tame Impala - Currents... You’ve outdone yourself, sir. Take what you’ve done, multiply it be three or so, to the nth degree. Ok, math isn’t my strong suit, but this album is just bigger in every way. More melodic, more epic jams, more variety, more, more, more. I read a lengthy interview in which Kevin Parker said some things which give us great insight into the album. He’s more confident, and cares much less about what anyone thinks. He’s the only critic he’ll listen to, and he’s going to do whatever he wants. Thank you, Kevin. 4. Rah Rah - Vessels... One of the hardest working bands in Canada right now. Yukon Blonde may have them beat in that regard, since I think they’ve played in Charlottetown about 10 times in the past few years...and they’re from even further west. But to the matter at hand. Rah Rah teased the album with an early release of the single ‘Good Winter’ which was an instant hit with me, and has so many great qualities. Praising what we all know, and can sometimes really hate, but should also love. Winter. I think Rah Rah are the perfect soundtrack to people my age. Nostalgic, while trying to figure out our futures. Trying to let go of our immaturity, and gain more true wisdom. Dancing while worrying about our responsibilities. Rocking out, with lots of heart, and truth, and this album is just really good. Listen to it. Now. 3. Joel Plaskett - The Park Avenue Sobriety Test... His best since ‘La De Da’ or maybe even better, but maybe I shouldn’t compare albums like that. He enlisted a lot of friends from his ‘P.A.S.T.’ for the album, and it runs the gamut. More political, more heart, and all of the things we already love about this east coast icon. That chorus for ‘Credits Roll’ is epic and hits me every time. ‘When I Close My Eyes’ is incredibly beautiful. ‘Captains of Industry’ and ‘Broke’ are so...now. Right on the nose. His version of the latter from the Strombo show breaks my heart. The album ends on a fun note with the title track, which wakes us all up, and then we go out, and we just keep living in the cold hard light of day.
2. Father John Misty - I Love You, Honeybear... Highly anticipated, and according to a lot of year end lists, I’m pretty sure it delivered. Beautiful, lush, luxurious, weird, jaded, vulnerable, funny, delightful. He seems to hate that he’s become so popular, and mocks...pretty much everything, but we need that. You can make pretty much flawless art, and still not take yourself too seriously. He’s not hiding anything, and his honesty is very appealing. Oh, and there’s music too! Like a 70′s folk rock weirdo meets an orchestra with every instrument and voice at their disposal. Sounds good every. single. time. The new hero. 1. Modest Mouse - Strangers To Ourselves... If what I hear is true, they could definitely show up on a lot of 2016 lists too. The plan is to release the companion to this album ‘as soon as legally possible’, so hopefully the law lets up really soon. It’s everything I’ve always loved about the band, again with as much music as you could possibly fit onto a disc, and it’s proof that this is easily one of the best bands of the last 20 years. They take 8 years to release a new album, and it’s like they never left. The main theme seems to be that we’ve created this world and these systems which are exact opposites to what we really want, and we’re all a bunch of hypocrites, and they’re right, but maybe I’m just getting carried away. Just listen, and hear it for yourself. It’s my favourite, that’s a really small point to make, but it at least deserves your attention too. Honourable mentions to : the Decemberists, Gabrielle Aplin, Leon Bridges, Will Butler, Patrick Watson, CHVRCHES, Florence & the Machine, Beirut, Kendrick Lamar, Blur, and EPs by Liam Corcoran, David Monks, Drea MacDonald, and Sorrey
131 Songs from 2015 (one per artist)
Just a selection of music/audio/sounds from the year gone by, that mostly i enjoyed a good deal or thought was pretty outstanding, interesting or notable in some fashion. Some of them i think are exceptional (for numerous reasons & regardless of taste), some of them i’m very fond of as artists/songs, some are there as artists to maybe look out for, and some others are just earworms or songs that just stayed knocking about in my head and are just nice to know - and perhaps might have been missed; some songs/artists are in here ahead of others just to vary it over other lists.
As always it’s a mixed bag, and I hope at the very least there is one piece of music here that's new to you and that you are taken by.
And finally, as i don’t tumblr or blog or anything (bar this list), this won’t be seen by many (if any?) people so if you like it or think it’s of any worth in any way, please do send this on. Hope you like it.
