2016 in Television: (6/60): Better Call Saul (AMC)
When Better Call Saul wrapped up it’s admirable first season, I was feeling a little uneasy. I liked the show so much for not being Breaking Bad and forging it’s own path that when it seemingly took a swift turn towards Saul Goodman, I got a little bit of show whiplash. However when the show returned my fears were proven to be misguided. The show was still the show. It was still a little goofy. Still a little serious. Still more poignant than I ever thought it could be. And most importantly still not Breaking Bad: Part Deux. It gave me faith that the show would not rush to characters we know just because, but rather because that’s where the story is leading naturally. It’s rare that an all-time great show spins off one that has the potential to be the same, but two seasons in and I still have faith.
That One Thing™: It’s Kim Wexler. The One Thing™ is the wonderful, emotional and moral backbone of the show played by the excellent Rhea Seehorn. If we want to get super specific it is Kim Wexler in the post-it note montage. It’s a short story of desperation, hope, and failure told in under three minutes in the most pleasingly type A style imaginable. Everything in Seehorn’s performance from the tone of her voice to her fluctuating body language is absolutely perfect in conveying what this character is feeling after each disappointing phone call. I literally could not love this scene more if I tried.

2016 in Television: (7/60): Better Things (FX)
I am a deeply cynical person who also believes that people are mostly good. That internal friction is why I gravitate to shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, while also crying during every third episode of Jane the Virgin. It is also why Better Things is a show pitched exactly into my wheelhouse. Like Pamela Adlon herself, the show’s humor engine is sarcasm. Everything out of Sam’s mouth has bite to it without crossing into territory that feels cruel which is key. This is, after all, a show about a single mother raising three daughters, it could not and should not go full It’s Always Sunny. What the show does instead is slowly reveal it’s warm, gooey center. The show is constantly able to thread a line between bitterness and sweetness without either feeling too overbearing. It hits on things that are so unique to single motherhood I want to cry while also making a Constance Zimmer joke that maybe 10 people will get. It’s sweetness with just enough bite. A perfect tonal piece.
That One Thing™: There is a moment at the end of the Halloween episode (Scary Fun) where everything is going spectacularly shittily for the entire family. The show doesn’t do what it would if it were written by a sad man. It doesn’t send them all to their rooms to wallow in their misery and resent each other forever. No, this show brings them together in a way that is so true to the show’s essence and so perfect in the moment, it would be cruel to spoil it for you. A perfect moment of female solidarity.
2016 in Television: (5/60): Atlanta (FX)
If Louie were 100% less old (white) man yells at cloud with actual jokes that are actually funny than you might have something resembling Donald Glover’s Atlanta. This comparison is the easiest one to make because the shows have such similar DNA: one man given carte blanche by FX to make their own show and coming back with something a little surrealist, but wholly unique. It’s also at it’s core a lazy way to look at the whole thing because Atlanta is just so. much. better. (Sidebar: I’m going to be honest I included that intro just so I could roast Louie one more time so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #sorrynotsorry) It’s rare that shows come out of the gate this fully formed and genuinely great, but with each passing episode the show kept proving itself to be one of the very best freshman seasons of tv in years. The world and characters feel real and fleshed out without losing the surrealist bent that makes the show truly wonderful. I don’t think you can truly talk about this show fully until you mention the absolutely star-making performance from Brian Tyree Henry as Paperboi, the rapper whom Donald Glover’s Earn is trying to manage. It’s the type of performance that is so singular and special that you long for it when it’s not on screen, even when everything else is literally just as fantastic. You win this one Donald Glover, I guess you’re forgiven for leaving Community.
That One Thing™: I could, and probably should, write an essay on the seventh episode of the season entitled B.A.N., an acronym for a fake television network called Black American Network. In maybe the funniest episode of the season, Paperboi is being interviewed on a fake Charlie Rose-esque show called Montague. The subject matter of the episode is a little icky at first blush, PC culture is ruining America, but after the episode settles in it lands on some really well argued points. The episode is also complete with fake B.A.N. ads like this one that goes from 0 to 100 real quick. Also, the price is on the can tho..?
2016 in Television: (3/60): American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson (FX)
If you’re me, an avowed hater of Ryan Murphy properties despite being able to admit that they are sporadically entertaining, when you hear that name attached to this subject matter you look at the whole endeavor a little sideways. But then this thing premiered, became the defining tv moment of 2016, and you realize Ryan Murphy may have been the perfect person to tell this story. The trial of OJ Simpson was so sensationalized and at times unbelievable that someone with his finger on the pulse of camp had to be the person behind putting it to television. When you have someone like Ryan Murphy you get scenes like the ones between Selma Blair’s Kris Jenner and Connie Britton’s Faye Resnick and the world is richer for it. The show’s not all camp though. It’s works on a dramatic level as well, mostly due to the fact that Larry Karaszewski and Scott Alexander were the true showrunners of the project, not Murphy. They seemed to have had a clear plan from the start and didn’t differ much in the execution. It’s that kind of tight storytelling that Murphy properties never provide you with, but he got there here with a little help.
That One Thing™: The one-two punch of “The Race Card” and “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia” is the obvious, true, and objectively correct answer. The powerhouse episodes basically functioned as Emmy generators for Sterling K. Brown, Courtney B. Vance, and Sarah Paulson. But hey, they were great so who’s arguing?
I’m very late to the party but it doesn’t feel right to dive into 2017 without reflecting on some year-end favorites. This year was a challenging one but many of the books, TV shows and movies on this list made it more bearable.
