Yes No Maybe So By Aisha Saeed and Becky Albertalli Yes No Maybe So is written from the perspective of two main protagonists, Jamie and Maya, by two writers. This is a style of writing that I have fallen in love with. It is always beautiful to read a story from multiple perspectives and see what each character was feeling in the moment, about the same situation. At the heart of the book is a coming of age love story about Jamie and Maya, but it is set against a political backdrop and it poses an important question about the legal age to vote. I find myself believing we need to review the legal voting age, I question my knowledge on democracy and how elections work in Nigeria. (P.S I don’t have a clue how they work) Aisha and Becky take us on a course of navigating a special election and it whets your appetite about how much change you are capable of. They have left me with a need to finally register to vote and believe in something that is bigger than myself. #bookstagram #booklover #bookreview #2020readinglist #AishaSaeed #BeckyAlbertalli #YesNoMaybeSo https://www.instagram.com/p/CCMWBUvFajH/?igshid=4zc2auswnjw2

Normal People by Sally Rooney Normal People wasn’t on my list for 2020. It made my list after a conversation with my friend, Toyosi, and I am kind of glad it did. Normal people isn’t a story neatly gift-wrapped with a bow on it. It is a love story punctuated by the brokenness we carry around: from our insecurities to our need for acceptance. It examines how the people we are affects the decisions we make and how these decisions affect the people we love and desire to build bonds with. I think the title is befitting for the novel, because the narrative is closely related to life and the many curveballs it throws our way as we journey through it. Yes, I will be revisiting Normal People, but it will be sometime in the distant future to remind myself that things don’t always have to go smoothly for them to make me feel completely happy #sallyrooney #bookstagram #bookreview #2020readinglist #normalpeople https://www.instagram.com/p/B-uoBQil9il/?igshid=3fw1oc64ixbu
Ta-Nehisi Coates’ The Beautiful Struggle left me with a need to capture every part of my childhood, to document my memories of the early days that shaped the person I am today. He affirms that dysfunctionality within the family is normal and love in its many expressions is what binds us together. The Beautiful Struggle is a book you need you read and make of it what you will. #2020readinglist #bookstagram #bookreview #thebeautifulstruggle https://www.instagram.com/p/B-hp4WdFQCF/?igshid=1wdy97cj80m5x
Frankly In Love By David Yoon I didn’t expect ‘Frankly in Love’ to leave me in tears, but I am Oreoluwa and everything makes me cry. David Yoon writes about a lot of things in ‘Frankly in Love’ that, at so many points, feel overwhelming and deserving of more pages to properly resolve all the issues raised about life and living, but life itself can be a lot and we all always find ways to keep swimming. Maybe that is the message at the heart of the book: to keep going, to keep loving and to stay honest with yourself. I don’t think I will revisit ‘Frankly in Love’ anytime soon, but I will hold on to the book till I am ready to read it again. #bookstagram #2020readinglist #franklyinlove #DavidYoon https://www.instagram.com/p/B-N2jZnFzep/?igshid=oed2dnf5r914
I decided to gift myself a number of books from my reading list for Christmas and Reasons to Stay Alive was top on my list. Matt Haig does a great job of writing about mental illness in a manner that resonates, by just telling it how it is. He doesn’t attempt to set out practical steps on how to get better or list out all the things you did wrong that led your mind down the path it’s gone, instead, it is just a simple acknowledgement that says ‘I see you, you are not alone’ and many times, that is all it takes for you to be reminded that you are seen, heard and not alone. Most importantly, Reasons to Stay Alive gives hope; it comes in rays from the first page, then culminates into a bright spot you can step into and hold on to by the end of the book. You have this calm reassurance that you will be okay! You just need to hold on and find what will get you to the point where you are okay. I will definitely be re-reading Reasons to Stay Alive but in the mean time I am about to dive into ‘Note on A Nervous Planet’ by Matt Haig. #bookstagram #2020readinglist #reasonstostayalive https://www.instagram.com/p/B9oePjQF_Gv/?igshid=1o4smfkfymktw
This book!!! I can’t remember how ‘No Visible Bruises’ got on my To Read shelf, but I’m so glad it did. Rachel Snyder does an incredible job of examining the impacts systemic and cultural biases have on domestic violence, and presents it all as an incredibly thoughtful and well researched book. I understand quite a lot about abusive relationships, both from professional experience and personal, but this book just brings everything together with such clarity. Heavy on the CW for readers, but I highly recommend it. This is the kind of resource that shifts a paradigm and can lead to significant cultural and social change. • • • #2020readinglist #domesticabuse #domesticviolence #intimatepartnerterrorism #restrictivemasculinity #metoo #toxicmasculinity #heterosexism https://www.instagram.com/p/B9PyvM1hn2d/?igshid=z2mqb0a9hwmt
