2021 vs 2025

I don’t think I ever posted the 2021 one when I made it because I absolutely despised how it came out; I remember nearly deleting the procreate file in rage a few times because I just couldn’t understand how to get the depth and colors I originally wanted U-U

I’m glad I didn’t give into the rage; and my need to save every piece of art I’ve ever made no matter how bad I think it looks; came in clutch. The fact that scene that I found so striking on that chapter in 2021 still remains rent free in my head till this day is insane. I’m sure highschool me would probs be frothing at the mouth over the fact I actually somewhat know perspective now! Hoorah!

I still need to get better at coloring and values, though. I think I have a pretty strong sense of color when it’s a character or two of them standing or interacting with no background; but that’s exactly the problem.

I’ve kinda stagnated to just “drawing character over blank paper”which is the drawing equivalent of the writers “white room/empty box” problem. All character no other substance: what white room are we in etc.

As a result of this plight; I’ve been forcing myself to draw NOT just a background a day but a character directly interacting with said background as well; makes it a lot more fun it doesn’t even have to look good as long as it shows me drawing a bg that makes sense in the context of whatever story the image is telling. Case and point; here’s one I did a few days ago with Bendy snooping outside of the window in his room.

nd yes; while there is NOTHING wrong with just drawing the characters and calling it a day the dopamine receptors are clawing at the enclosure to give them more!!! I wanna draw backgrounds: I wanna get better at hands: I want to draw in a way that tickles the itch in my brain so nicely I basically ascend to another plan of existence.

There’s so many amazing artists; especially on the IM fandom that have this incredible way of making these characters feel so real and tangible HOW DO YALL DO THAT RAHHHHH show me your wayyyysss!!!

[i could write a whole post about how it’s been so easy for me to compare myself to others and my art to their art and beat myself up over not being able to pull off something they seemingly do so easily. It’s so easy to start feeling left behind art skill wise even if there is literally no race to start. We’re all baking cakes here; people love cake and I need to learn to appreciate my art as it is now.]

So many of the ideas I have in my head INVOLVE more than just the characters themselves. RAHHH I want my boys to be tangible is that too much to ask???

I want to make their world feel real and look at my own art like a creature because I’m obsessed with the silly shows in my mind that no one else can see!!! I want the world they exist in to feel lived in; and I can’t get good at that if I don’t draw it a billion times.

Huge problem I’ve been running into lately and especially with this art here: the moment I start combining character with background my brain throws all the color theory rules out the window and becomes empty as to how the hell i’m upposed to go about things 🥲🥲🥲 which is nuts cause I’ve barely grazed the surface of color theory and now I’m bringing a whole other environmental factor.

Matter not though; I’ll just keep focusing on getting batter at my values since I feel very week in that when it comes to backgrounds.

I’m also thinking of making a mini 5 week prompt list thing where each week you have a different theme you need to create a background + character drawing with but im not entirely sure if I’ll commit to that but yet.

Okay so a while ago I came across this really cute fic called To Steal a Butterfly. I had made fanart of it, but it was before I had tumblr so I never posted it and eventually forgot I’d even made it despite my love for the fic. Well… I recently was going through old WIPs and found it again! So I wanted to redraw it since the fic holds a special place in my heart for being one of the first fics I read when I first got into the DCA fandom 💜

The left is the new one and the rights the old drawing. The reason the old one doesn’t have the hat is because I tried for so long and could NOT make it look right at the time. So I just settled with giving them a butterfly clip instead. Since I’ve gotten more confident with my art I decided to give it another go and actually was able to make something I was happy with! The patches and embroidery were just a fun design touch I had added at the time. I’m also particularly happy with the belt buckle being the vague shape of a butterfly :)

Anyway, I truly love To steal a butterfly by @scarlett-ink and you should really go read it if you have the time. They’re also the author of several other AUs I love (a particular favorite is their Stardew valley AU) so go check them out! This is a threat! I will go to your house! And… idk steal ur socks or something lol
