Whether or not you like Rush's music, you have to respect the absolute audacity of 2112.
Mercury Records: Alright guys, your last album sucked. Critics hated it, fans hated it, we hated it. You got too experimental, too weird, too self-indulgent. Songs were too long and not catchy enough. This is your last chance, this next record needs to be poppy, radio friendly. This one needs to actually sell or you're done.
Rush's next record: Side A is a 20-minute science fiction rock opera with a downer ending about individuality versus the collective featuring extended complex instrumental breaks. The closest thing to a radio-friendly single is a song we wrote about different episodes of The Twilight Zone. It doesn't really have a hook, but it does have a long, sick guitar solo.
They were explicitly told "Make a consumer-friendly pop-rock record or you're done" and did as much of the opposite of that as humanly possible, and it fucking worked
