she spends the season of christmas in a permanent state of shell shock.

this year is different than the last, celebrated with more people than the last - actually, the fact that it’s celebrated at all is enough to make her surprised enough.  things are changing around kasper in an alarming rate; just the fact that she’s strolling through dongdaemun market right now to glance at the christmas lights is enough to make her mind drift to other things.  to other people.  to another time that she doesn’t want to think of.

it’s still what she thinks about every single year.  winter always brings with it the memory of a time long passed; she always thinks of her brother and where he is on christmas.  she always thinks of what could have happened and hopes that he’s having a better time than her ( knows that could be impossible, knows he could be dead ).  every time she steps foot outside among christmas lights and snow, kasper wonders what life would have been like growing up with him.

how different she would be.  how different everything would be.

kasper likes to think she would have been a good sister; about the christmases that they would have, could have, should have shared - the entire family at the tree opening presents, sharing hot cocoa during a blizzard, watching christmas films under the same blanket and begging their parents to let them stay awake.  instead, her christmases past all added up to the same thing every year - a moment alone, presents left in the corner of her bedroom, no one to say merry christmas or i love you to.  

as she grew up, the holiday spirit even seemed to dwindle more.  instead of wrapped presents, she’d just find new things.  then, simply money.  when she moved out, it was mailed to her in an envelope without even a note attached. 

the people in dongdaemun seem happy at christmas.  

kasper is always and forever on the outside looking in.
