Happy International Mother Language Day! On this day in 1952, some valiant souls sacrificed their lives while protesting the refusal to recognize their mother tongue as a state language of the country. I haven’t recovered from my art block yet, so this is what I could come up with.

The blood-dripping text in Bengali — “রাষ্ট্রভাষা বাংলা চাই” (We want Bangla as the state language) — was written on the placards carried during the protest. The blood symbolizes the martyrs’ sacrifice, the flying birds represent their holy spirits and the freedom of speech, and the blue open sky signifies respect for and preservation of all mother languages around the world.

Also, if you can, please suggest me some drawing ideas — I’m having a serious art block. 🙂

Ehe man diese Stadt erreicht, besahen die Printzen den so genannten Luthers Brunnen an der Strassen, wohin ehemahlen dieser Lehrer seinen Spaziergang gehabt, und diesem Orth den Nahmen hinterlassen. In der Stadt liessen Sie sich, biß die Mittags-Mahlzeit zubereitet wurde, das Collegium Augusti, und darinnen Lutheri Museum weisen, allwo Er dem Teuffel, der Ihne ob dem Ofen in der Arbeit, und Ausfertigung seines Catechismi hindern wolte, das Dintenfaß nachgeschmissen, wovon der Dintenfleck noch zu sehen, und nicht abzuwischen und zu vertreiben seyn solle. Nach eingenomener Mahlzeit kamen sie in Fortsetzung dero Reyse gegen Abend aus denen Chur-Sächsischen, in die Chur-Brandenburgischen Gräntzen, bey welchen beyden nicht zu vergessen, sondern in allwege zu rühmen ist, daß ein Reysender hierinnen viel Commodität hat, daß er keines Weg-Weisers bedarff, in dem stumme Führer, nehmlich Säulen, so alle Stund und sonderlich bey Wegscheidungen anzutreffen, und alle Orth, so man auf diesen oder jenen Weg zu passiren hat, anzeigen, deren Stelle vollkommen vetretten.

Before one reached this town, the Princes viewed the so called Luther’s well on the street, where erstwhile this teacher took his walks, and bequeathed this place the name. After the taken meal they came in continuation of their journey towards evening out of those Electoral-Saxon into the Electoral-Brandenburgian borders, for both of which it's not to be forgotten, but praised in all ways that a traveller has within them much commodity that he doesn't need a signpost, as the silent guides, namely columns, so every hour and especially at crossroads can be found, and show all places, as one has to pass on this or that way, substituted their place completely.

Ekusher Gaan - Shobdartho

Ekusher Gaan (Song of the twenty-first) is a poem written by Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury (born 12 December 1934) to commemorate the students who were shot on 21st February 1952 in the Bengali Language Movement for demanding Bangla to be the national language of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). Here is the vocabulary arranged verse-wise.

First Verse

একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি ekushe februwāri – 21st February; this day is the main focus of the poem as well as the history surrounding it

অশ্রু-গড়া ôsru-gôɽaa – constructed of tears

রক্তে রাঙানো rôkte rāngaano – coloured with blood

ছেলেহারা chhelehāraa – of people without sons

ছেলেহারা শত মা chhelehāraa shôtô maa – “a hundred mothers without their sons”

আমার সোনার দেশ aamār shonaar desh – literally “my golden country”; Bangladesh is written like this in poetry to glorify it

Second Verse

নাগিনী nāginī – female serpent

কালবোশেখী kaalboshaakhī – storm clouds that arise in the month of Boishakh, which is the first month in the Bengali calendar and marks the season of summer

শিশু হত্যা shishu hôttaa – massacre/ murder of children

বিক্ষোভ bikkhobh – protest and anger

বসুন্ধরা bôshundhôraa - Earth

খুন করা khun kôraa – to murder

রোখা rokhaa – to obstruct; impede

মানুষের দাবি maanuʂher daabi – people’s rights

খুন-রাঙা ইতিহাস khun-rāngaa itihaash – murder-stained history

রায় raay – verdict

Third Verse

সেদিন shedin – on that day

গগন gôgôn – sky; heavens

বসন bôshôn – garments; clothes

শীতের শেষে shīter sheʂhe – at winter’s end

চাঁদ chããd - moon

চুমো খাওয়া chumo khāowaa – to be kissed

হেসে heshe - laughing

ফোটা phoʈaa – to bloom; blossom

রজনীগন্ধা rôjônīgôndhaa – tuberose flowers

Fourth Verse

পশু pôshu – beasts; wild animals

চেনা chenaa - recognised

ওরা গুলি ছোড়ে oraa guli chhoɽe – “they shoot bullets”. This is an allusion to the day 21st February 1952 when Pakistani soldiers opened fire on a few university students who were protesting to have Bangla as the national language of the region.

বুক buk – chest; breast; bosom

বিক্রয় করা bikrôy kôraa – to sell away; clear away

নিয়েছে কাড়ি niyechhe kāɽi – “they robbed and took away”

অন্ন ônnô - food

বস্ত্র bôstrô - clothes
