What to Do in Amsterdam in One Day: A Perfect Local Itinerary
Forty minutes. That's how long it takes to walk across the old centre, corner to corner, and it's the reason one day in Amsterdam actually works when one day in Paris doesn't.
Most people still blow it. They book Anne Frank for ten, a museum at noon, dinner somewhere across town, and end up spending half the day on a tram. Do it as a loop instead. Here's what to see in Amsterdam in one day without the zigzag.
Morning (8:30 am): Stroopwafels at Albert Cuyp Market
Stroopwafel. Straight off the iron, still soft enough to fold in half. Nothing in a packet comes close, and I say that as someone who has tried repeatedly to prove otherwise.Buy cheese while you're there. You'll want it on the boat.
Late Morning (10:00 am): Pick One Museum at Museumplein
The Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh and the Stedelijk sit on the same square, maybe a hundred metres apart, which fools people into thinking they can do two. They can't. Not on a day that also has a boat in it.
Rijksmuseum for scale and Golden Age drama. Van Gogh if you'd rather stand in front of something that gets to you. Book the night before either way, because turning up without a ticket costs you an hour of queue.

Midday (12:30 pm): The Jordaan and the Nine Streets
Ten minutes on foot from Museumplein and the crowd noise drops off. The Jordaan's little lanes and the shops along the Negen Straatjes are the part of Amsterdam that isn't performing for anyone.
Lunch is a kroket pulled out of the wall at Febo. Or patat oorlog at Frietsteeg, which is fries under mayo, peanut sauce and raw onion. Sounds like a dare. Tastes like the best thing you'll eat all day.
Afternoon (2:00 pm): See the Canals by Small Boat
Skip the glass-roofed barge. Rent a small electric boat, no licence needed, and take the Prinsengracht at your own speed with the cheese and a few cold ones.
Two hours does it. Raining sideways? Bike a lap of the Vondelpark instead and pretend you meant to.
Late Afternoon (4:30 pm): Free Ferry to Amsterdam Noord
It leaves from behind Centraal. Four minutes, costs nothing, and Noord on the other side barely feels like the same city. The EYE museum's white swoop sits right on the water. Pllek has actual sand.
Evening (7:00 pm): Bitterballen, Beer and Jenever
Foodhallen if you want options. Brouwerij 't IJ, under the windmill, if you want beer. Bitterballen either way, with the mustard.
Finish at Wynand Fockink. They fill the jenever glass to the rim, so you bend down and take the first sip without picking it up. Everyone watches. That's part of it.

Is One Day in Amsterdam Enough?
Yes, if you stop trying to see everything. Two neighbourhoods, one museum, a boat and one proper meal will beat a nine-stop sprint every time.
