Full
Ten cents a loaf, it used to be. And fresh-churned butter, courtesy. In paper wrappings, just like that! Piping hot, and doused with fat. It’d be us on that pavement, mouths crammed with bread. Chewing without any thoughts in our head. We’d sigh our contentment, lick cream from our cheeks, play with our laces and shuffle our feet. Brush crumbs off our pant legs, flour from our palms, then settle into a rare sort of calm. Bellies laden, perched on that curb, we’d pause a moment in our own soft world, in still satisfaction, that space between breaths where you’re not cowed by life-stuff, not fearful of death. And for all that was happening, all going down, all swirling and pulling and shifting around – we were the center, the eye of the storm, the pulse of existence in little kid form.
I remember. A loaf of bread. A curb, a companion, and our spirits fed.
