Tips on “Keeping the Calm” When Your Family is Growing!

Pregnant with or planning on a second, third or forth baby!?!  Well, it is definitely a shift in dynamic, a whole lot more love and a sometimes a wee bit of an adjustment for the current babe(s) of the family.  Here are a few tips to help ease the adjustment.

Seek their help & make it a team effort

From grabbing a fresh diaper, to picking the babes outfit for the day.  Asking their advice and making it seem like you couldn't possibly take care of the new baby without their help, it keeps them involved and feeling rather important.

Bond time with the new baby

Having older siblings sing, read and talk to the new baby about anything and everything is just win-win all around.  Sibling bonds develop in the most beautiful unexpected moments of an ordinary day.

Watch your wording

Referring to your newborn as their new brother or sister rather than “the baby”. It is a subtle way to reinforce the importance of their new role and their relationship.

Listening and Empathizing  

Talking to your little ones about their feelings about the new baby.  Recognize the changes that are happening and how it may make your older kids feel. Giving them one-on-one time whenever possible makes a world of difference.

Plan Ahead

Having the current babes of the family set up for the new arrival.  From the room, shopping for supplies, clothes etc.  Explaining to them how things will change in routine.  Having them understand the needs of a new baby.  A good tool to have is a special box of toys or books that are only played with and looked at when the new baby is feeding.  

A growing family is a wonderful thing.  Although it can seem challenging at the time, implementing some of the tips listed above can not only increase connectedness with your child but also help with a smooth transition!
