Asperger's Syndrome

-People with Asperger's Syndrome have normal to very high intelligence. -People with Asperger's Syndrome have unusual reactions to the way things smell, taste, look, feel, or sound. -People with Asperger's Syndrome usually focus on small details rather than the bigger picture. -People with Asperger's Syndrome face difficulty understanding non-verbal cues (hand movements, facial expressions, tone of voice) These facts helped me understand why Christopher was being and acting the way he is. Christopher is intelligent which explains why he was confident in wanting to take the A level maths. He also explains the Monty Hall problem which is another sign of his intelligence. As we're reading the book, we notice how Christopher resents the colors yellow and brown and likes the color red. That explains the unusable reaction he has with colors. When explaining things, Christopher does that by writing direct sentences. He doesn't try to hide anything or change the slightest detail. He simply describes the world as he sees it. An example of that is when he writes about the leaf he saw in the officer's shoe. Another example would be when he tells us his age, he doesn't simply say he's 15 years old, he said he was 15 years 3 months and 2 days old. Christopher faces trouble with understanding people's expressions as we find in the book as we read. When his father is mad at him, Christopher isn't sure what's going on or how his father's feeling. Also when Siobhan drew him some face expressions, he wasn't able to know all of them. He only understood that a smile means someone's happy and a frown means someone's sad. All things considered, this really helped me understand and comprehend why Christopher was the person he was.

Christopher's relationship with his parents

From what we read, we didn’t really meet Christopher’s mom at all. We heard about her from Christopher. According to what his dad told him, his mom died from a heart attack. Christopher’s dad didn’t want to take him to the hospital to see her before she died. This made me have a though: did Christopher mom really die? Was it because of Christopher condition? Was she tired from taking care of him, or was it because she couldn’t see her son in that condition? Did the reason have something to do with Christopher’s dad? Up until where we read, I can’t know for sure. Then Christopher has the conversation with Mrs. Alexander from house number thirty-nine. In this chat that took place between the, Christopher tells her that his dad thinks Mr. Shears is an “evil” person. Mrs. Alexander explains to him why because she doesn’t want him to ask his dad and make him upset. Mrs. Alexander tell Christopher that his mom has an affair with Mr. Shears. That explained a lot of things for me. First, it made sense to me why Mr. Shears left Mrs. Shears. It also kind of gave me thoughts to why Mrs. Shears cooked food for Christopher and his dad, and that would be because she really felt lonely and wanted to be with people in the same situation as her. I also think that she did the part that she did part of Christopher’s mom duty as a mom because she felt either guilty, or pity toward Christopher and his dad. At the same time though, it made me think again if Christopher mom really died. I thought that maybe she ran away with Mr. Shears, and that made Christopher’s dad make up a story about his mom death because he didn’t want Christopher to know the truth. He was either scared to hurt him, or he didn’t to ruin the nice picture Christopher had about his mom, or he didn’t want him to hate his mom even though she left him. That would explain why Christopher wasn’t allowed to see his mom when she was in the hospital. At the same time, even though it was a lie, it showed us how much Christopher’s dad cared about him. He kept the truth to himself and endured the pain and hardship of raising a son with Asperger syndrome. I think Christopher’s dad that because Christopher didn’t really have a big reaction to the whole thing. The first thing that he did after hearing the news, he said that he wanted to go home. From our previous information, we know that it is the place where Christopher feels comfortable. This brought me to the conclusion that Christopher was affected negatively by the news and he didn’t like them, and it made me believe that he was actually shocked by the news. However, Christopher didn’t understand what he was feeling and it didn’t make any sense to him that’s why he wanted to be somewhere he feels comfortable, and that’s why he wanted to go home. I can tell after reading the first few chapters that Christopher and his dad have a great, strong, and happy relationship between them. Christopher’s dad shows a lot of care toward his son. He considers Christopher condition, and tries to deal with things he doesn’t like. At the same time, he shows his son a lot of love. The action between him and Christopher at the police station is a good example of that. it showed Christopher’s dad a patient person who has a big heart, and that he accepts Christopher for he is, and love him no matter what.

Written communication

Each one of has his own way of expressing his feelings and things that he wants to say to the others. All of us wants to speak and use our voice to communicate with others, but we do it in different methods. Some of us prefers using their tongues and speaks directly to people, others likes to use their voices and sing their feelings. Another group of us like to use their hands to speak. It might be by drawing and coloring, or it might be by writing. For me writing is a the way I like to speak to the world in. it is a very deep language that has different meaning and a mixture of feelings in it, but the best thing about it is that it’s a lasting way of speaking. I am writing this today, but someone might read it after years. Thinking about that makes me excited and happy because as I sit writing this now, I know that it is worth the time that it steals from me, for someone will read it later. That how social media are. Even though I am one of the least active people in social media, throughout this project I discovered that social media are not just for fun and gossiping. Social media is like the box that saves all the words and massages that people put inside it, but the unique thing about it is that it sends their words to many people at different timings. Written communication is also a way to meet new people and old ones, as well. I knew many people before joining them on social media, but then I realized that I don’t really know all of them. It was as if social media introduced me to familiar people, yet different ones. Social media made me realize that written communication doesn’t only introduce you to different people, instead, and more importantly, it introduces you to a new side of you that you never realized was there. For me, thinking that people meet me through my words and real character rather than my look is a very meaningful thing. I might’ve liked written communication, but I discovered that it is also the magic way of speaking, as well. Whenever I start writing something that I want to tell others about, I feel like my fingers are moving alone and my words flows out of nowhere as if it was kept in a locked cage that was opened for a moment and none of the thoughts and feelings inside it wanted to stay there, so they all escaped to be part of my words that will be send to others.

Till the chapter I’ve reached this is what I know about Christopher’s parents: Mother We know that Christopher’s mother died of a heart attack, and that she  had an affair with Mr.Shears. In my opinion, she was a good mum, one that loved and cared her son, because when Christopher knew that his mum was in the hospital, he made sure that his father sent food to her and he also made her a get well soon card, this shows that his mother was a loving mother, that's why Christopher cares about her. Isn't it that when someone who loves you gets hurt, you take care of that person in respond to her loving. Father The relationship between Christopher and his father is fine, it's on the right track. His father lovingly and diligently cares for Christopher, he carefully prepares all of his son’s meals according to Christopher’s rigid list of likes and dislikes, but he also becomes angry when Christopher doesn't obey him. His father loves Christopher, example, when Christopher was put into a cell for kicking a policeman, his father fought for his release. When he was released they did the hand touch which was like a hug, this shows a Love between father and his son.

Overcoming Adversity

Adversity is a difficult or an unpleasant situation. Adversity will somehow face you at some point in your life. Everyone goes through but you are the one who decides how to react to it. You might accept it and make good out of it or you might deny and reject it. Overcoming these adversities is hard but with determination and hard work you could do it. Later on these adversities will make you stronger as a person and make you who you are today.

Being different than other people is hard to deal with, but dealing with it can sometimes be harder. The picture above shows a disabled man playing tennis. Even though he’s on a wheelchair, that didn’t stop him doing the thing he loved the most, playing tennis. This shows how he came over adversity and this obstacle. He’s doing what people thought was impossible, possible by winning. Overcoming and adversity builds up your character and overcoming one can really positively change your life and how you think about it.

How social media changed the way I think about written communication

In the past, letters were the written communication people knew to interact with others. But as the world became more advanced with technology, social media came.

Written communication on social media has helped me in many ways. Writing to people can sometimes be way easier than talking to them face to face. If it wasn’t for social media, many written thoughts wouldn’t have been out of my mouth. I’m in general a person that keeps my thoughts and ideas to myself, but social media has somehow helped with letting them out. I’m more close to my friends with the help of social media. Sometimes I only see my cousins and friends on the weekends, but writing to them everyday makes me feel closer to them. The thing I hate about written communication is that you can’t express yourself well enough like how you would by talking face to face. When talking face to face you can see the expression a person makes and hear the tone of their voices. But with written communication you can’t do that. Social media has helped us interact with more than the people we know. In the past, most people would write only to the people they knew. But now, you get to share your written ideas or thoughts with the people you know and the people you don’t. You also get to see what others write. By writing to your friends and family, you get to update them with what’s happening in your life. All in all, I personally think social media has changed how people view written communication. It is quick, easy and great.

Facts of Aspergers Syndrome

-Difficulty reading facial expressions.

In chapter 3, Christopher showed us pictures of facial expressions that his friend drew for him in order to know which expression meant which emotion. Christopher kept that paper in his pocket and took it out whenever he didn't understand what expression a person was feeling. This shows his difficulty in reading facial expressions.

-Poor communication skills.

When the policeman was asking Christopher questions about the murder of the dog, his answers were invalid to the questions that are being asked. It shows how his communication skills are poor, because when a person doesn't know how to answer it means he /she has communication problems. Same with Christopher, he doesn't know how to answer, that's why he’s answers are invalid.

-Increased ability to focus on details.

Seriously, when Christopher describes something he does it in details. Like  one of the description of a stranger was that his shoes had 200 holes and had a leaf stuck at the bottom. That's how he focuses on details.

- Appear to lack of empathy.

When Christopher found a dead dog in Mrs.Shears garden, he didn't feel sad or nothing as any human being will be, instead he patted the dog and that was his response to the death. In addition, when he was talking about his mother’s death, there wasn't a feeling of sadness that one of your parents has died. Christopher doesn't show emotions.

All these facts help me understand why Christopher acts the way he does. It's because they are the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome which Christopher is undergoing through.

Christopher’s relationship with his parents

Christopher’s mother:

Christopher’s mother passed away due to a heart attack, he felt sad but confused and the same time, especially after he found out that his mother had something to do with Mr.Shears, when he heard about that he didn’t know what to do and what to say about his feeling, i would se he was shocked and surprised.

Christopher’s father:

Christopher’s father loves his son so much, but i don’t think Christopher feels the same way, Christopher likes his father but not a lot, there is a missing part between the two. they have many ways to show love for each other by taking care of one another. Even though they don’t say much about there feelings we always know there is something deep inside the heart, but i think Christopher got mad when he didn’t know about his mother and Mr.shears.
