This is my edited final Flour Sack sequence based on the feedback I received last week in my Animated Sketchbook tutorial. Like my tutor suggested I made the flour sack a lot heavier looking by adding a slower get up and a wobble when he does stand to show the lack of balance in weight. There reference I had for this is shown in the previous post, a scene from Wall-e. This really helped me envision what I wanted from my flour sack, drawing a few reference pictures before finally sketching them out on TV Paint. I think this is a definite improvement from my previous flour sack sequence that I thought I had finished, so I’m glad I had that tutorial with my tutor to point out my inconsistency with weight.

The other day I rewatched Wall-e with my boyfriend and it reminded me of how great of a film it is. The story is beautiful that is brought to life so well by its 3D animation, it made us sob in parts because the emotion was so real. Anyway, I remembered this scene when I was looking for references of how to make my flour sack heavier when it got up off the ground in my second sequence. What I particularly loved in this is the wobble in the captain when he stands up for the first time, like a new born baby, his shape even resembles a flour sack! From this reference, I am planning to do a few sketches of the flour sack that imitates this realistic movement for my own animated sequence.

This my final Animated Sketchbook expression change sequence, which I finally completed this week. Even though it took a lot of work and re-work I am really happy with how the final outcome looks, I think it’s my favourite 2D animation I’ve made this year. I’ve put a hell of a lot of work into this so I’m also pretty proud it turned out so well. I think I solved my problem with timing and made it a lot less consistent by adding more frames of that disbelief/shocked face drawing, still making it look alive by adding the teary effect in the eyes. I also think the tear movement is a great end to the piece, as it really emphasises the emotion of the character in that frame. I don’t think there's anything more that I could have done or thought of to improve the sequence, but I guess there are small details that could be improved for example the consistency in drawing of the ears and shoulders.

Animated Sketchbook Tutorial

For my final Animated Sketchbook Tutorial I got this feedback:

1st sequence (Expression Change/Self Portrait) - My tutor still wanted to see more of a pause on my emotion of disbelief/shock, suggesting to hold the frame for as long as you can without making it look too still. One way of doing this is to have a subtle light in the eyes to suggest a sort of welling up, just before the blink comes in and tears appear. He said that I must start working in TV Paint now instead of Photoshop so that I can get my timings right in a much easier way. He also thought that at the moment my timing is too consistent, hopefully adding more of a pause in the disbelief/shock expression will fix this. In terms of frames, a few more need to be added at the end when the head turns to show more of a ease out, which I was thinking myself too.

2nd sequence (Flour Sack) - My tutor thought I needed to exaggerate the stretching and slumping in my drawings, and make the getting up heavier as the start of my sequence suggests that he is a heavy sack.

3rd Sequence (Ralph) - My tutor thought this sequence didn’t need any improving, but to take clues from this animation in terms of timing, ease in and ease out and follow through when working on my other sequences.

In the same workshop that I worked on my third sequence with Ralph, I drew two more frames for my first self-portrait expression change sequence. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the same pencil I used in photoshop to do the previous frames, so it looks a little different which is frustrating and is why I didn’t do any more frames. To get around this problem I think I will do all of the frames on the photoshop I have at home which has the right pencil, then put it into TV Paint if I need to. Alternatively, if that doesn’t work out I can start again on TV Paint or leave it as it is.

This the final animation for my third sequence with Ralph, where I made the improvements I planned on making. I’m very pleased with how it looks now, I definitely think the movement is more realistic and flows better. I could further develop my sequence by making the flower smaller to emphasise his large size, I could also possibly make the arm movement more precise by adding my frames and edit the timing better.

This is how the third sequence with Ralph looked like, without the changes to timing, the arm movement when picking the flower, and without taking away the fur. Other than those points of improvement I think the movement is convincing and portrays his character just how I envisioned.

Animated Sketchbook Tutorial (Week 5)

I asked for feedback again on my animated sequences so far, after making the improvements from the last tutorial.

1st sequence (Expression Change/Self Portrait) - My tutor thought the 3rd shocked expression drawing was very good, he suggested I hold it there longer than the other drawings but with a slight closing of the mouth before the head turns. He also mentioned looking at how to draw teary eyes for the last part of the sequence as the head is turned.

2nd sequence (Flour Sack) - The Flour Sack animation is good as it is and doesn’t need anymore work at the moment.

3rd Sequence (Ralph) - I need to work on the movement of the arm that picks the flower, my tutor recommended I do more of an ease in and ease out by changing the frames I had for that movement. He also suggested I add more frames for the moment he brings the flower closer to his face. One of the elements I realised needed taking out was the fur on Ralph’s body, this is because it really distracts the eye and doesn’t really do much for the sequence. I did try and make it work by placing the hair lines in the same place with a slightly different shape but it was still too distracting in my opinion.
