The night before a new beginning
Ever since I first watched fat sick and nearly dead with Joe Cross, I’ve been wanting to do a reboot. And not just kinda wanting, in a half-arsed kinda way, but genuinely, desperately wanting to try it.
I feel like I’m stuck in a kinda rut at the moment. I’ve been learning more and more about veganism, and becoming more and more convinced that it is the right choice for me. I’ve been working hard at making the right choices and changing the way I eat, but mentally I’m still back where I was before I decided to make this change.
So I’ve decided to finally do a juice fast. I’m going to aim for 30 days, which will take me to the 11th December. From there, I will see what the next step for me is going to be. I know it’s going to be vegan, and as healthy as possible. But whether I’m going to allow vegan ‘junk’ or substitutes I don’t know yet.
As well as the mental aspect, I also have a significant amount of weight to lose which has built up while I’ve been eating terribly. I currently weigh in at 116.9kg. So part of documenting this process will be to record how many kilos I lose. I don’t have a goal in mind. I just want to be fit enough to walk without being out of breath, and to feel good about myself. I have a long term medical condition which I’ve had surgery for and my doctors have now reached the end of what they can do, so I’m seriously reconsidering my lifestyle in an effort to do what I can to help my body heal.
My juicer arrived in the post last week, but I had to wait for my goodbye meal with my workmates before I started. That was this evening, so tomorrow morning I begin. I went shopping today before I went out, and bought enough fruit and vegetables to last me about five days or so. Although annoyingly I forgot to stock up on lemons so I will have to go and fetch some tomorrow. I’m still waiting for my spirulina to be delivered. Despite this, I’m super excited, plus my mam has agreed to join me and that’s going to be amazing for her. She’s waiting until Friday though, so she has the weekend to adjust, so it’s just me for the first three days.
My plan is as follows:
4 x 500ml juices a day (at least one green, plus a mix of colours)
250ml coconut water
1L of water (to begin, increasing to 2L)
At least 30 minutes walking a day
Swim for 1 hour once a week
Plus every day I will check in and set goals for myself in the evening. I like having short term things to focus on, rather than a whole 30 days in front of me.
Tomorrows goals are:
Walk for 30 minutes
Go to supermarket to buy lemons
Part 1 of 30 day shred
Watch Forks over Knives
Read Joe’s book again
Post photos of juice for accountability.
It’s now past midnight, and therefore day 1 of the fast has started. I’m looking forward to challenging myself and seeing how I cope with this. Denying myself is not something I am used to, and yet something about this feels different. I’ll see whether that has changed by this time tomorrow!
Day 8 -14th November 2013
ceeeeeeeeeeeb :( i hate this stupid fast. Ive officially run out of food so i have to head back to the supermarket this evening. its so annoying how i have to lug a suitcase there because i have to take public transport and the veggies are too heavy for me to carry :( 2 more days until weigh in!! i am PREEEEYYYING i will see a number below 80!! so nervous!
for breakfast i made:
- 1 carrot - 1 tomato - 1 orange - 1/3 Lemon
Its all i had left and didnt produce much juice. oh well. tasted fine. wont be able to juice again until i go to the supermarket. i suppose i should go now.
i went to a new place to buy my produce, it was a fruit and veggie type market place. i never went there before because i assumed it would be more expensive, i dont know why, but it is sooo much cheaper!!! so glad i discovered it!
forgot to keep track of what i ate for lunch and dinner.... oops sorry. made the mistake of looking at pics of food .................... ughhhhh!! cant wait to eat :'( ive decided for my first meal back im going to eat a mango.. hehe
So ive made some decisions. Ive decided to continue with the juice fast until the 7th of December, (HOPEFULLY), which is 30 days. After that, i've decided to juice 2 out of 3 meals a day. So mainly ill juice for brekky and lunch, and then have a healthy dinner. Hopefully this will continue the weight loss, and it will make it easier to fast with my friends. I dont know how much longer ill be able to use my wisdom teeth as an excuse for not eating!!
Day 5 - 11th November 2013
Day 5!! Woo! Half way there until my first weigh in! I have decided to weigh myself at the 10 day mark instead of the 7 day mark, as I would really like to be 80kg or under for my first weigh in, and I know if I am not i will be really disappointed and will struggle to continue the fast. So yeah Im giving myself 10 days to lose the 4kg. It's still a fetch but im hoping for the best! I have upped my dosage of water and will be drinking HEAPS from now on. The only issue is i have to go to the bathroom every god damn 10 minutes. so annoying. anyway
For breakfast I made:
- 2 carrots - 1 apple - 1 Handful of spinach - 1/3 lemon - 1 orange - 2 celery stalks.
I dont know if its the juicer or what but ive noticed that the spinach i put in is producing little or no juice at all. im not sure if it was always like that but i could have sworn at the start it produced juice.. also the juicer is making weird noises and stuff.. i dunno. Right now im just using whatever i have left to make my juices, as im trying to make my produce last until the end of the week. Only 2 more days!
For lunch I made the same as breakfast but without the spinach. This time it had a lot of pulp in it and i dont know why.. maybe its because i didnt clean out my juicer last night (too lazy). But it worries me that im drinking the pulp because its a solid food technically.. idk. This juice is my favourite i think, im considering just buying these ingredients next time and only making this juice. But that makes me think ill get sick of it and not want to continue. who knows..
As a snack i juiced 4 baby beetroots. I couldnt buy regular beetroots at woolys, so i just bought baby ones. I hadnt used them until today because i didnt know how to put them through the juicer. once i found out you could just put them in whole, i did it! and it tastes delish! like beetroot soup..which is the closest ill get to having a meal during this. too bad theyre expensive :(
For dinner I made
- 2 carrots - 4 baby beetroots - 1 orange - 1/3 lemon - 2 celery sticks - small handful of blueberries
It tastes great, but mainly of beetroot. Im definitely coming to the end of my supply, hopefully it will last me 2 more days. Tomorrow i will buy a juice at chadstone which will help. But hoorah! I made it 5 days without eating food! so proud of myself :)
Day 2 - 8th November 2013
Today i woke up feeling fine, although i felt very hungry falling asleep last night, but couldnt be bothered to make a juice or wake everyone up in my building.
For breakfast, im having the "Jolt Juice"
2 Apples
1 Orange
1 Cucumber
1/4 Lemon Peeled
4 Kale Leaves
I had to replace the kale leaves with a few handfuls of spinach, but it tastes great! It mainly just tastes of apple with a little kick. I like it a lot.
For lunch I made the "Tornado Juice"
1 Orange
1 Apple
¼ Lemon (peeled)
1 Inch of Fresh Ginger Root
1 Carrot of normal size
1 Big Handful of Spinach
2 Celery Stalks
1 Handful or Cup of Cherry Tomatoes
1 Full Size Cucumber
I didn't use any ginger because i HATE it, and i replaced the cherry tomatoes with one large tomato. I didnt drink it until about 5 hours after i made it, and it tasted alright, wasn't too great.
For dinner I created my own concoction,
1 Cucumber
1 Carrot
¼ Lemon (peeled)
1 Apple
1 handful of Blueberries
1 Big Handful of Spinach
2 Celery Stalks
It tasted pretty nice. Feeling fine today. Everyone said they got headaches and extreme hunger for the first 1-3 days but i feel fine! Looking forward to tomorrow

Hey! I have decided to start a 30 day juice fast in order to lose weight and become healthier. I currently weigh 84kg's (185lbs), and my goal weight is 70-73kgs (154lbs). My starting date is 7th of November 2013 and i will be finished on the 7th of December! Feel free to follow me to keep up with how im going! I will be posting everyday, and doing a weigh in every 7 days.
